Slow Computer
« Reply #1 on: December 04, 2008, 02:20:38 AM »
Please do the following

If you have an older version of SDFix, delete it
We need an updated copy
Download
SDFix
Save it to your desktop

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
 • Restart your computer
 • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
 • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
 • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
 • Choose your usual account.

In Safe mode
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Go to START>>My Computer>>Double click to open the C:\ folder
 • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
 • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
 • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
 • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
 • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
 • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
Post the report from SDFix please along with a fresh hijackthis log

Note: I'm not at home right now, or even close to home, so I may have a delayed reply
I'll check back as soon as I can

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

sorry for the delay ixjerryxi, and thanks for the donation

As a followup
You should keep some of your software updated, to patch security holes and help to prevent malware from infecting your computer

First, can you download this Flash uninstaller, save it to desktop, don't run it yet
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashpl...lash_player.exe
Close down all browser windows and run the uninstaller
You can delete it after it was run successfully

Your version of Sun Java is outdated, with your browser windows closed
Access your Add and Remove Programs and remove
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 4

Don't reboot yet
Instead, your version of SpywareBlaster is also outdated
Can you download the latest copy from the following link and save the installer to desktop
http://www.download.com/SpywareBlaster/300...cdlPid=10852839
Don't install it yet
Can you open your copy of SpywareBlaster from START>>All Programs
Under the main window select "Disable All Protections"
When finished, exit SpywareBlaster
Then remove SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 from Add and Remove Programs

Finally, reboot your computer
Back in Windows
First install the new SpywareBlaster
When installing, select Manual Updating
After installation is complete, Check for Updates
After Updating
Select Protection Status and select "Enable All Protections"
Exit SpywareBlaster
Remember to occassionally check for updates
Delete the installer afterwards

Updating Java:
 • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
 • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
 • Click the "Download" button to the right.
 • In the Window that opens, select Windows, in the dropdown box next to Platform:>>Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
 • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
 • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Delete the installer afterwards

Let's update your Flash in both IE and Firefox
Use IE>>Go to the following link
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=DXLUJ
Ensure to UNTICK the optional "Free Google Toolbar"
Then click on the Agree and Install Now button
Allow the ActiveX component to install and run
You will then be prompted that Flash was successfully installed in a bit

Update Flash in Firefox
Use Firefox>>Go to the following link
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=DXLUJ
This time, save the installer to your desktop
Close down Firefox and then run the installer
You can delete the installer afterwards

I would also update your Adobe Reader
I don't use Adobe Reader, but I would opt to uninstall your copy from Add and Remove Programs
Then visit Adobe Reader website to get the latest copy
Ensure that if they offer any toolbar or extras
To deselect that option
If you would like to try a different PDF reader then Adobe, let me know
I use a couple others that do a great job, and a bit speedier in opening big documents
If you decide you want to try one, don't install the latest version of Adobe Reader yet

P.S. If you haven't ran an online scan at Kaspersky's for some time
I would opt to uninstall it from Add and Remove Programs

Also, your version of Ad-Aware may be outdated, do you run a scan with it occassionally?
If not remove it from Add and Remove Programs

What version of Spybot do you have installed?
Can you open Spybot, when it opens click on HELP>>ABOUT
Let me know the exact version please

In addition, can you go to the following link
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/
You don't need to download the scanner, just click on the Start Scanner button at the bottom
On the next window
Wait for the Java Applet to load then click on START
Don't enable thorough scan
Verify version installed status are up to date
Let me know what isn't please

It's a bit outdated
I suggest that you do the following
Close your Browser window
Open your version of Spybot, click on IMMUNIZE on the left then click on UNDO
This will remove all Immunization

Note: The version of Spybot you have installed may take awhile to undo the immunzation

Close Spybot
Access your Add and Remove Programs and remove Spybot
Reboot the computer

Back in Windows
Download the latest version of Spybot from here
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Spybo...oy/1043809773/1

When installing, if you don't prefer to have TeaTimer running, UNTICK that option
Don't Immunize yet
Instead, after installation, Open Spybot>>Check for updates
Then click on Immunize>>Immunize again at the top green cross
Close Spybot
Check for updates every once in awhile and reimmunize when needed

Spybot will also add a long Host file to help protect you
A big host file could slow your browsing experience
As suggested by MVPHosts
Quote
Editors Note: in most cases a large HOSTS file (over 135 kb) tends to slow down the machine. This only occurs in W2000/XP/Vista. Windows 98 and ME are not affected.

To resolve this issue (manually) open the "Services Editor"

    * Start | Run (type) "services.msc" (no quotes)
    * Scroll down to "DNS Client", Right-click and select: Properties
    * Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"
    * Select: Manual, or Disabled (recommended) click Apply/Ok and restart

One additional note:

Editors Note: The above instructions are intended for a single (home-user) PC. If your machine is part of a "Domain", check with your IT Dept. before applying this work-around. This especially applies to Laptop users who travel or bring their machines home. Make sure to reset the Service (if needed) prior to connecting (reboot required) to your work Domain ...
