internet/ethernet problem
« on: December 09, 2008, 01:49:48 AM »
Hi All,
I'm a complete newb when it comes to IT related stuff , so forgive me if there is a simple solution.
I had great internet access with my old aopen wired modem on a adsl2+ connection , using a dell 9400 laptop.
Until a thunder storm , when I lost the ability to see my modem and connect to the internet.
I thought this might be  a good time to upgrade and get a wireless modem/router , so bought a belkin n wireless modem/router.
So now I have 2 modems and no access to the internet ...smart hey .
Basically after the storm , when I plugged in a cable into my ethernet slot. windows doesn't respond by saying,
found new hardware ..etc. It does nothing.
In my network connections , i have the ethernet card connection and wireless connection.
When I highlight and and check status everything seems fine .
when I check the ethernet connection properties , i see the tcp ip properties and they are blank. No ip address etc.I click on repair and windows says , it cannot repair cos the tcp ip is not enabled for this connection !?
The same goes for the wireless, except through wireless I can see the modem and windows says strength high..belkin ..etc.

I ran windows diagnostics and it reported everything fine . I'm running xp service pack 3
I reset my tcp ip using the netsh and now when I ip config , I get strange ip addresses with characters in them .?
I tried pinging and got timed out result. still no internet or ability to see the modem settings.

So I presume i have a few problems , What can I do to find out whats causing what.?
have I been going about it the right way or just stumbling in the dark.?

I dont have any other device to plug into the ethernet slot to check the card.
My last resort would be to do a fresh install of xp sp2, but I'm trying to avoid that If I can.. especially if it doesn't solve the problem !!.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
cheers
James

Have you logged onto router yet?
Can you ensure that Mac Filtering is disabled
I think that with some Belkins
In your address bar type the following addy to access configuration

http://192.168.2.1

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

I have not been able to logon to the router .The page says cannot find web page blah ,blah and trys to
connect to the internet instead of working offline.
I thought that even if my ethernet was not working I could log on to the router wirelessly ..?
I will check to see if the mac filtering is disabled .
thanks

Shut down the laptop
Unplug the power to the Router/Modem
Use the cable to connect to the ethernet to the laptop

Leave the modem unplugged for a minute then plug it back in
Wait till lights indicate it's connected
Start the laptop and see if it connects

If not, try the address again in IE
exactly as I post it
http://192.168.2.1

Here's how a few users have managed to fix the problem with Belkin
Quote
1) In the "Internet Explorer" address bar, type "http://192.168.2.1" (Make sure your computer is first hard wired to the router).
2) Click on "Connection Type".
3) Select "PPPoA" and click on "Next".
4) Change the MTU value to "1400", Check "Dial on Demand" and change the Idle Time (Minute) to "999" and click "Next" and then "Save/Reboot".
5) Then download the program "DrTCP021.exe" from the website "http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp".
6) Run this downloaded program and under "Adapter Settings" select your particular Ethernet Adapter and enter a MTU for it of 1400, then press "Save".
7) Reboot the computer to ensure the process is completed.

What make/model router do you have?

Hi guestolo
I tried to connect to the modem as per your instructios and still no luck.
I ran the setup cd of the modem ( belkin N wireless) and it aborts once it tries to communicate via the wired connection
I ran the network card software and it detected the wireless and ethernet cards , telling me all hardware was fine.It did however have 0.0.0.0 as an ip adress in my ethernet card settings.
I ran ipconfig/all and got this ( see attachment).

Hope this helps with the diagnostics.
cheers
James

Are you running any Software Firewall on this computer?
If so, can you disable it
If not, ensure the XP Firewall is disabled

Also, that method I asked to connect to router
In IE address bar

Just try this, don't include http://
JUst the nos.
192.168.2.1

Also, just to be clear, you do have a combination Router/modem
Or are they seperate?
Is there an Exact model of Router you have

How are you posting here? Do you have a computer connected to this Router/modem already?

I am running Mcaffe , which has a firewall, but I thought I disabled it .will check tonight.
I definately have disabled the windows firewall.
I tried the numbers only in the address ( cos it was stated in the instructions ) , but no luck .IE just puts in "http:// " when i press enter.

The modem/router I think is this one F5D8633au4A
Belkin N Wireless Modem Router - ADSL Modem, 802.11b/g, Draft 802.11n, 4-Port LAN

I'm posting all this from work _ist about 5.30pm now, so you wont hear from me after 6pm till tomorrow java script:add_smilie("http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />","smid_5")

Try something else to while your at it
Try restarting your computer in safe mode with networking and see if you can connect wired
I'm unsure if wireless would work

Also, if you have to much troubles, I would uninstall the McAfee Firewall till you have your connection figured out
After you do so
Shut down, recycle the router again, power off and on as before
Then start modem/router
Then boot computer
