At one point, one of the bad files I saw referenced something about SightSpeed, which is something that was installed when they got a webcam, but is not needed.  Should I go ahead and remove that?

That's good news viejo1221
Hold onto Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware
Update and run a Quick Scan occassionally

Go to START>>RUN>>copy and paste in the following then hit OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix and it's components

Access your Add and Remove programs and remove
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 6
Also, if possible, remove McAfee uninstaller
Reboot the computer

Back in Windows
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows, beside Platform:>>Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
After it is installed you can delete the installer
I suggest that you add SpywareBlaster to your protection software
SpywareBlaster  by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
Select Manual updating when installing
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection Status" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
or again, click on Protection Startus>>enable all protection

Take a look at miekiemoes site with other ideas on How to prevent Malware:
Also, look at the bottom of her page for an informative link
Help! My computer is slow! - How to improve system performance after malware removal
Don't worry about the other links, as they are not updated
Note: you will already have MBAM as an Antispyware scanner

Additional Note:
We should also update your version of Acrobat Reader to help secure it
I would opt to uninstall Acrobat Reader 8 from Add/Remove
Then download/install the latest Acrobat's website
When installing, if you have the option to untick any Toolbars, etc.. they may add to the installer
Choose NOT to install any, they are not needed for the A. Reader to function properly
That really goes with any free software, if a toolbar is not needed or wanted, why install it

Check out Avira's options to schedule a weekly scan, it's a good idea
Get your parents familiar with the program, don't let the big AD scare them, it only happens after a successful update
I usually set to scan at a time I'm not using the computer and have Avira shut my machine down when done

Hope that helps  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

EDIT>>I forgot about OTScanit2
  • Double-click OTScanit2.exe to run it.
  • Click the Cleanup! button
A list will be downloaded>>Allow it Internet access if prompted by your Firewall
Don't change anything in this list
  • Select Yes at the prompt
Wait for the confirmation box to open to reboot the computer
Don't mouseclick during the wait as you may cause the tool to stall
  • Select Yes to reboot Now
If you have any further questions after doing the above, don't hesitate to ask

Glad to help

You may be referring to SpeedRunner, they look similiar but not the same
SightSpeed is legit

I'll lock this topic as your problems appear resolved
