Browser opening site not chosen
« on: January 16, 2009, 08:09:21 PM »
Hi Guestsolo,

This time it's not my PC.  :-)

Friend came over for me to simply update her AVG software and happened to mention her browser sessions keep getting "hi jacked".

E.g. http://77.93.75.150/go/?cmp=vm_mg_juan&...p;cl=profiling4

Comes up when she was originally browsing overstock.com

Here's a HiJack this log.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm on my way out soon for dinner, in the meantime can you do the following please

Download > ATF Cleaner < by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.

Double Click on ATF-Cleaner.exe to Run it
Check the boxes to the left of:

Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
*Prefetch (Windows XP) only.
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit from the Main menu

download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Save the installer to desktop

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.

  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

With that log from MBAM also can you do the following

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from >>here<< and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to launch program.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Your firewall may alert you that RSIT is requesting Internet access. Please allow it.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:  log.txt<-- this will be maximized and info.txt<-- this will be minimized.
Post both those logs please
NOTE: You may get an error message posting back log.txt
If you do, can you upload it, if you need instructions to upload, let me know

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Can you do the following please

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
Save it ONLY to your Desktop

      --------------------------------------------------------------------
Temporarily Disable your AntiVirus/AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with this tool

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply

NOTE: Do not mouseclick inside ComboFix window as it's running, it may cause it to stall
ComboFix will run again on startup, it will prompt that it's creating a log
This process could take up to 10 minutes, let it run uninterrupted please

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as Export.bat

Here's a link to the results:  http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/6476bb0...da06c09eb5e8a5f

I guess you know this link will continue to work after I close the page.  If it doesn't though, I'm going to post a copy of the results page, and maybe even attach a copy of the results page to either this response or my next one.

Hi Guestsolo,

If you can use the link or use the data I pasted, you can ignore this post.  What I did here is have Firefox save the page as 'web page complete'.  Then I took the output, which was an HTML page and a folder full of files, and I zipped them together to create the file I attached to this post.

FYI, my friend is still using her system in between the times I've spent following your directions.

She says it is running much better - no more hijacked browser windows, but that she is seeing a message from Resident Shield about a "threat" from time to time.

I received an email with a text version of the window she keeps seeing:

> Resident Shield alert
> Accessed file is infected
> Threat detected!
> File name:  C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-
>                   9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP189\A0018590.dll
> Threat name:  Trojan horse Generic12.AWPH
>                         Detected on open.
>
> Remove threat as Power User
> Heal        Move to Vault      Ignore     Help

She's been choosing "Heal" and continuing to work.

Don't worry about the file at the moment
We'll fix that in the next steps
The file is in her System Restore folder

Can you have her find and delete the next file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\3b323d68-.txt < this file

Go to START>>RUN>>copy and paste in the following then hit OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix and it's components
And also reset her system restore points

Can you post a fresh Hijackthis log afterwards, just to ensure it looks good

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

We should get her to update some of her software, patch up security holes

Close down all browser windows
Access your Add and Remove Programs and remove the following
Adobe Reader 7.0
Adobe Reader 8.1.2
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 4
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 5
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 7

When the last is removed
Reboot the computer

back in Windows
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows, in the dropdown box next to Platform:>>Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Update Adobe Reader
Go to the following link
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Download and Install the latest
NOTE: When installing, if you have the option to untick any Toolbars, etc.. they may add to the installer
Choose NOT to install any, they are not needed for the A. Reader to function properly
That really goes with any free software, if a toolbar is not needed or wanted, why install it

Let me again know how things are running afterwards
I'll lock this topic if everything is fine

I uninstalled and installed up to date versions of the software as you requested.

I'm going to call her and let her know she can come pick up her PC - she let me have it yesterday to speed up the devirusing process - and we'll see how it goes over the weekend.  I'll let you know if she notices any strange behavior.

In the meantime, I thought I'd post perhaps one last HJT log in case you see anything else I should do.  If there's some dubious software you see installed that I could get rid of, let me know please.  Her Dell Network Assistant bugs us every once and a while and I'm tempted to uninstall it.  There was another app, whose name I did not see, that popped up the other day that pointed out a couple of apps - I think Epson and, I just can't remember, were out of date and should be updated.  I wouldn't mind getting rid of it too, but I don't know what it was.  Big help huh?

Thanks for all your assistance so far!

Sorry, I'm trying to get here more frequently

The app your talking about, it's probably legit, but there may not be a need for it to run on startup
Give Startuplite a try and see what it figures you need running
Here's a link
