Computer locked up,,,need help getting to bois screen????
« on: February 16, 2009, 07:11:28 PM »
Got this computer,,, not sure what happend.....
when I start it up the computer makes its normal beep sound then my monitor light comes on for a sec or two then goes off to blink, then the computer will beep again, then will beep again and again and so on.
Now with the hard drive unpluged the computer just does the normal one beep.
I want to format the whole computer,,, (I know how to do this once I get to the bios screen) With the hard drive in it wont let me get to the bios screen, what can I do? I also tryed a windows boot disk and still nothing.

Heres what I know about the computer:
was running windows (xp i think) and has a L7VMM2 ESC Motherboard,,,now i dont know much about mother boards and how to get them to work.

I can disconnect all drives connected to my IDE cables and still enter the Bios
It is IDE right? not sure, just guessing, maybe SATA
That doesn't appear to have anything to do with it
It could be your cables itself
How about the battery to the CMOS, has it drained, they don't usually go that often
but they have been knowin' too

Disconnect all IDE cables then try booting and starting in BIOS setup
Which key you hit on keyboard, F2, delete
I'm not sure, you should be prompted

If not, ,maybe a video card issue
What do you think/
If I had the computer here, I could dig a little deeper

Look at the information you supplied
What the heck is the Make/model of computer?

Give the EXACT beep codes, it's important to help figuring on what your problem may be
Is it One short beep, long beep
Long beep>>2 short beeps
Those are examples, what is your bios, amibios,etc........
Try a little troubleshooting on your end
Disconnect whatever does NOT need to be connected, then try booting
Can you hook the harddrive to another computer as either cable select or Slave and boot then Format it

ok alot of what you said to me makes sence but some things im kinda missing on.

1 i didnt know that the bios should come up with all ide cables diconected. ill try that,,,,and ill try a new battery.
2 When i remove the orig. hard drive and install a clean formated one theres no screen comeing up....maybe its the video card like you said....it runs an on board one im pretty sure ill check that out farther.
3 Also its one of those desktop computers with no name on it,,,so i dont know the model.
4 the beeps are linear, like all the same legth and the same time apart...im thinking short ones?? But then i never heard a long one to compare.
5 as for the key i hit i dont know exactly for this computer....but no it doesnt promp me it doesnt stay on long enoght to.
6 i dont know what amibios means?

Can you give the exact beep codes,
Is it like 3 short then One long?

If you do change the battery, remove the old one for about 30 minutes
This will/may reset the bios to defaults
Remove the battery and then you can get the numbers off of it
