command prompt and internet help
« on: April 02, 2009, 07:09:55 PM »
Whenever I try to open the command prompt in windows xp, it restarts the desktop and does not open the prompt. What I mean by restart is that all the icons disappear and then reload. The same thing happens in safe mode, except that it asks me if I want to continue loading safe mode.

The other problem with the computer is that it has an ip address, but it does not load any web pages. I tried winsock fix, but to no avail.

Is there anything else I can do?

Here is a copy of the HJT log

First: Decide which antivirus software your happiest with
Either Norton's or Nod32,
Uninstall the other that you don't care for, personally, I would stick with Nod32, but it's your option
It is not recommended, or asked to have more than one AV
More than one can cause system conflicts or system instabilities
Once you've uninstalled one, reboot the computer

Come back here and post a fresh Hijackthis log and let me know how things are running

Is there anything you can suggest for me to do after that because the computer is at work and I won't have access until tomorrow. Also, Norton and Nod32 have been running together for the last six months without any problem.

Well, there are always updates that affect any computer
Any major updates with any of your AntiVirus software lately?

It is NEVER recommended to run more than one AV software
Why would you need too?
As one scans the other conflicts

But< why not try the following and post results
Download > ATF Cleaner < by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.

Double Click on ATF-Cleaner.exe to Run it
Check the boxes to the left of:

Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
*Prefetch (Windows XP) only.
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit from the Main menu

download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Save the installer to desktop

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.

  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Also post a fresh Hijackthis log

In addtion, I just realized your Hijackthis log is out of date
I only like to work with the most updated version
From your desktop, delete your copy of Hijackthis

Then, Download Hijackthis Installer from HERE
For an alternate download location, you can try HERE
SAVE it to your desktop
Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open

Under Main Menu, Select
Do a system scan and save a Log file
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and Paste the Whole log back here to the forum----It is all important!

You didn't take no Action on any of the entries found by Malwarebytes
And MBAM was not fully updated

Open Malwarebytes, click on the Update tab and check for updates

After updating, do the following, follow the instructions Closely
list]
  • select "Perform Quick Scan", under the Scanner tab, then click Scan.

Sorry about the malwarebytes thing. I initially save the log before removing and posted that. I believe there wasn't any problem because nothing popped up during removal. I am unable to update the program because, like I said in the original post, the computer has an ip address, but will not load any web pages. But there's nothing I can do until Monday because the building is closed for the weekend. Hopefully all will go well then

Are you transferring files to the computer that doesn't connect?
If so, I need you to download some tools and transfer to the computer

Yes.  So far I've downloaded everything to a flash drive and transferred it to the infected pc. I then copy the results and use a different computer to post them.

OK, I need you to do the following
But wait till just before you are going to have access to the other computer, to ensure we have the most up to date version

Download and save to the flash drive
I was going to have you download the Malwarebytes latest database manually, but the updates are out of date
So use the version you have
Ensure to remove everything selected

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
  • Tools->Options->Main tab
  • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    * It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
        * Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
Transfer this File to the Desktop of the computer without Internet

      --------------------------------------------------------------------
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with some tools
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combo-Fix.txt in your next reply

Please supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

In addition, can you now open Malwarebyte's AntiMalware
Check for Updates and run a fresh Quick Scan
Remove everything selected and post it's new log

Close down all browser windows
Access your Add and Remove Programs and remove all the following

iMesh 5
iMeshBar
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 11
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 7
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player

Reboot the computer after All/Any of the following above is removed

Back in Windows
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
  • Scroll down to where it says "JRE 6 Update 13".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows, beside Platform:>>Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.

  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Ensure your copy of Adobe Reader is up to date
Open Adobe Reader and click on HELP>>Check for Updates

Copy ALL the BLUE text below and Paste to notepad
Don't use anything else than notepad or the script will not work

KillAll::
Driver::
704099e1
Folder::
c:\windows\system32\.704099e1
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"AlcxMonitor"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\704099e1]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\ViewMgr]

Save this as txtfile on your desktop, with the exact name of
CFScript

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Combofix will start>>Follow the prompts
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

When finished, it shall produce a log for you  with the same name C:\ComboFix.txt..
Can you post that log please with a fresh Hijackthis log and let me know how things are now running

NOTE: I'm not sure If I totally agree with your idea of keeping some of Symantec's installed and just disabling it from running, you may find your system runs better with it totally uninstalled
I take it you decided to keep NOD32 installed? Good choice by the way

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

It looks as if much of Symantec is still hanging around

Can you do the following please
Download the Norton Removal tool
Select the product you had installed then follow all of Step 3

After that is done, can you then do the following
Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from >>here<< and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe and choose to Run it
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Your firewall may alert you that RSIT is requesting Internet access. Please allow it.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:  log.txt<-- this will be maximized and info.txt<-- this will be minimized.
Post both those logs please

NOTE: If you get an error message trying to post the logs back here to the forum
Just post info.txt back here
And upload log.txt

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here
