Computer will not run spyware removal progs.

I am working on a friends computer. At first it wouldn't even connect to the internet. He had Norton Internet Security. That was blocking the internet. I am assuming because of spyware/virus/ or some other type of malware. I removed that, connected to the internet to install and run AVG. I ran avg and it detected 8 things that it cleaned up. There was no issue there. Then I went to download Spybot Search and Destroy. I installed it, but it would not run. I could see it in the bottom right hand corner or the running programs however there was no user interface. Even when I clicked on the icon in the bottom right and said launch Spybot SD it would not launch. I uninstalled/reinstalled. Nothing. I then tried every other spyware removal program listed on this site and could not get any of them to launch.

I have included a Hijack log, in hope that you might be able to see something that is out of the ordinary. (Also, when I try to go to my computer and click on C: it gives me this error message: Windows cannot find 'RECYCLER\S-2-4-72-100032131-100022116-100018440-1265.com'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
  • Tools->Options->Main tab
  • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:


    * It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
        * Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    SAVE IT ONLY TO YOUR DESKTOP

      --------------------------------------------------------------------
[color=\"#2E8B57\"]Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with some tools[/color]
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.


[color=\"#2e8b57\"]**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:



Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combo-Fix.txt in your next reply

Download [color=\"#FF0000\"]> ATF Cleaner <[/color] by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.

Double Click on ATF-Cleaner.exe to Run it
Check the boxes to the left of:

Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
*Prefetch (Windows XP) only.
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.
If you use Firefox browser
      Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
      NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit from the Main menu

download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Save the installer to desktop

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to [color=\"#006400\"]Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware[/color] and [color=\"#006400\"]Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware[/color], then click Finish.
       
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
       
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
       
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
       
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply

Just realized your running an older version of Hijackthis
Can you uninstall your copy from Add and Remove Programs
Then
Download Hijackthis Installer from [color=\"#FF0000\"]HERE[/color]
For an alternate download location, you can try HERE
SAVE it to your desktop
Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open

Under Main Menu, Select
Do a system scan and save a Log file
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and Paste the Whole log back here to the forum----It is all important!

In addition, close Hijackthis>>REOpen Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

That's weird. I did uninstall it, but I guess 100% complete doesn't mean that. I just went back to add/remove programs and tried again and it still won't uninstall. It gets to 100% complete then says less than a minute remaining. I wait 10 minutes and still nothing. It just stays at the 100% complete.

Let's update some of your software, and try and rid you of Norton's well we're at it
Can you do the following

Download and save to your Desktop
[color=\"#FF0000\"]Norton Removal Tool[/color]
Don't run it yet

Next: Download and save to desktop
Go to the following link

Download and save to your desktop
the Windows: [color=\"#0000FF\"]uninstall_flash_player.exe[/color] (205 KB)
Once saved to desktop
Close all browser windows
Double click on the Flash uninstaller, follow the prompts
You can delete the uninstaller after it has completed

Keep All browser windows closed
Access your Add and Remove Programs and remove the following
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player

Don't reboot yet, instead, run the Norton Removal Tool
    Follow the on-screen instructions.
     Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Once completed
Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
[color=\"blue\"]Updating Java:[/color]
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "JRE 6 Update 13".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows, beside PLATFORM:>>Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
In addition, your version of Adobe Reader is outdated
Open Adobe Reader, click on HELP>>Check for Updates, ensure to update to the latest available version to help plug security holes

Update your Flash, using Internet Explorer
go to the following link
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

Allow ActiveX control install when prompted
DO NOT install any Toolbar related software, unless preferred
UNTICK the selection to install any

After you have updated Flash for IE
Then install Flash for Firefox
Using the Firefox browser, again go to the following link
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
Download/save to desktop the Flash installer
Close Firefox if open
Run the installer, you can delete it after it has completed

Come back here later and post a fresh Hijackthis log and keep me informed how things are running

Everything seems to be running pretty well. The only thing I noticed was when I restart the computer it gives me a screen that says "Choose which operating system to start: Windows System Recovery Console or Windows Media XP. Something along those lines. The screen flashes so quickly I don't have time to read it all, it just starts Windows. I'll have to get back to you on the Poker thing. I'm assuming all of those aren't necessary. I also noticed they are running Limewire, wouldn't you advise against that? I hear it's a haven for spyware and viruses.

Just an update... I started to run AVG again just to see if anything came up... and of course a couple threats were found. I don't know how it missed them the first time but it did. A Trojan horse Generic was found. I'm actually in the middle of the scan, but was wondering what the ultimate virus finder would be? I just want to make sure that the computer is virus free when I give it back to him.

LimeWire itself isn't dangerous, it's what's downloaded that is
As you found with the AVG scan

The entries found in the QooBox are part of ComboFix quarantine area
The entries in the System Volume Information folder are System Restore Points, we'll deal with those after the next steps

I edited the instructions with OTMoveIt3 so as to have you just double click to run it
No need to right click on it and run as Admin, that was older instructions for a computer with Vista installed on it

Before you edited the post I clicked run as "owner" I couldn't do the administrator because I didn't know the password. I went to control panel/user accouts and noticed that administrator wasn't even listed. It said "owner" as the account and it did say administrator control below that. So anyways I ran it and it didn't do so well, when it restarted AVG found a virus immediately and I put in quarantine. I then saw that you  changed the post and I followed the instructions of just double clicking on the icon to run it as normal. Things went pretty well then. Here are the results.

Could you do one more step
Go to START>>RUN>>Type in msconfig
Hit OK

Under the General tab select Normal Startup
Apply and Close it, but don't reboot

Instead, come back here, run a fresh scaan and save logfile with Hijackthis and post it's new log

Edit again>>
