Potential Blue Screen Problem
« on: May 06, 2009, 10:30:59 PM »
Hi

Twice over the past week this laptop has shut down with a "fatal error" message on a blue screen.  It restarts fine, but with a rundll.error.  So I wanted to get help before anything major happened.

I ran hijack this, but that too gave an error message when installing/generating the log.  Thank you for your help.

Potential Blue Screen Problem
« Reply #1 on: May 06, 2009, 11:31:31 PM »
Please do the following
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
  • Tools->Options->Main tab
  • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    * It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
        * Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    SAVE IT ONLY TO YOUR DESKTOP

      --------------------------------------------------------------------
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with some tools
Please open the AVG 8 Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG 8 icon on task bar.

    * Click on Tools.
    * Select Advanced.
    * In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
    * In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
We will reenable this protection later

  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you.  C:\Combo-Fix.txt
I'll need to see that log later
Afterwards: Do the following

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

   1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
   2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
   3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
   4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
            Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
            Archives
            Mail databases
   5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
   6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
   7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
   8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button. Then post it here.

Please include all the following in your next reply

1. The report from Kaspersky's
2. The log from Combo-Fix
3. Run a fresh scan and save logfile with Hijackthis and post it

Ensure to reenable your protection with AVG

Kaspersky took over two hours to run the scan and said "No malware has been detected"; hence no scan report.

Can you do a few things for me please

supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

In addition:
Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.
go to this link
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
Browse to the file

c:\windows\system32\gulodedo.exe

Right click and select it
Then use the SEND FILE button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results this scan back here please
Or better yet, just link to the results page
Do the same for the next file
c:\windows\system32\lotonene.exe

One last step:
Please download DirLook by jpshortstuff from one of the following mirrors:
Link 1

There are no files called gulodedo.exe or lotonene.exe in c:\windows\system32.  So I couldn't do the subsequent steps.

Finally, when I tried to run DirLook.exe, the following message appeared in the black window:

"This tool has been deprecated in favour of SystemLook.
If you were advised to run this by a Forum Helper please inform them, otherwise have a nice day http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
Press any ket to continue......."

After I pressed any key, the black window went away and nothing happened.

That's it for now.

It's looks as if those files may be gone now
But just to make sure, can you do the following
Download OTMoveIt3.exe by OldTimer:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on OTMoveit3.exe on desktop and Run it
  • Copy the entries below in BLUE to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose "Copy"):

    ================================================

    :Files
    c:\windows\system32\gulodedo.exe
    c:\windows\system32\lotonene.exe

    ======================================================
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right-click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window  and choose "Paste".
  • Click the red "MoveIt!" button.
  • Close OTMoveIt when it has completed.
Note:  If an entry cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose "Yes".

OTMoveIt would of created a log at this location
C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log <-indicates date_time of log

Post that log please

Can you do the following please
Go to START>>RUN>>
copy and paste the following

 combofix /u
and press enter
This will uninstall ComboFix and it's components

Manually delete SystemLook and DirLook
Close all browser windows
Access your Add and Remove windows and uninstall the following
It's outdated and insecure
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 6

Next do the following:
OTMoveit3.exe
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Click the Cleanup! button
    A list will be downloaded>>Allow it Internet access if prompted by your Firewall
    Don't change anything in this list
  • Select Yes at the prompt
    Wait for the confirmation box to open to reboot the computer
    Don't mouseclick during the wait as you may cause the tool to stall
  • Select Yes to reboot Now
NOTE: This procedure will also delete OTMoveit.exe from desktop

Back in Windows
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 10.
  • Scroll down to where it says "JRE 6 Update 13".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows, beside Platform:>>Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Come back and let me know how things are now running

Ok thanks.  Did everything.  Hopefully will not have the blue screen recur.

One question: At start up, how do I get rid of the Windows Recovery Console option -- or should I let it be?

Personally, I would leave it installed, it's only a 2 second delay correct?
If you would like to remove it, let me know
But basically, this is what the Recovery Console is,
Quote
The Recovery Console is a feature of the Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 operating systems. It provides the means for administrators to perform a limited range of tasks using a command line interface. Its primary function is to enable administrators to recover from situations where Windows does not boot as far as presenting its graphical user interface.

I am sure you know better, so I will let it be.

Thanks a ton for your help.  And it is not necessary for you to answer this, but what was the problem?  Why did the blue screen show up?  Was it some virus?

I'll leave this topic open for a couple days, give you a chance to see how things are really running

If I don't hear back from you then I'll lock this topic
Or even if you want to pop back in after a couple days and let me know how things are still running
