Possible Keyloggers
« on: May 14, 2009, 11:25:52 AM »
I have a network of 2 computers that my husband and I use. We play online games and my account was recently hacked, I don't do much else on the internet and I rarely ever download programs of any kind, so I'm not sure how it happened.  Anyway, I've ran scans with several programs, all they seem to be finding is cookies, but I'm pretty sure there's got to be keyloggers or something.  Any help locating the problem would be much appreciated, I'm going to start with my computer since it is older and most likely the culprit. Thank you in advance!

Possible Keyloggers
Download OTListIt2 by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Close all windows and Double click on OTListIt2.exe to Run it
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTListIt2.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Save it ONLY to your Desktop

      --------------------------------------------------------------------
Temporarily Disable your AntiVirus/AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with this tool

With Avast, you can Right click on it's icon by the clock and choose to "Stop On Access Protections"
Ok the prompt

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply

NOTE: Do not mouseclick inside ComboFix window as it's running, it may cause it to stall
ComboFix will/may run again on startup, it will prompt that it's creating a log
This process could take up to 10 minutes, let it run uninterrupted please

We should remove some old software and update others to secure vulnerablities that malware can exploit

Access your Add and Remove Programs
Uninstall all older updates and versions

DO NOT uninstall the latest version>>Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 13

But remove the next ones, I suggest you do this with all browser windows closed
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
Javaâ„¢ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 2
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 3
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 5
 Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 7

remain in Add and Remove programs
Uninstall the following
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 < - this is very outdated
Viewpoint Media Player

Do you still use Mozilla Firefox?
Can you open it and click on HELP>>Check for Updates
Let it download and install the latest version

Your version of Adobe Reader is outdated, to help patch security issues
I suggest that you uninstall
Adobe Acrobat - Reader 6.0.2 Update
 Adobe Reader 6.0.1

Reboot the computer, after all or any of the above was removed

Update Adobe Reader
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

NOTE: Adobe Reader has become quite bloated, if you prefer not to install the latest version, and would like to try and alternative PDF viewing software
I recommend one of the following
Foxit Reader 3.0
Or my personal favorite
PDF-XChange Viewer
Whichever PDF viewer you decide on, every month or so, check for updates thru the HELP menu

Go to START>>RUN>>
copy and paste the following

 combofix /u
and press enter
This will uninstall ComboFix and it's components

I suggest that you add SpywareBlaster to your protection software
SpywareBlaster  by JavaCool
At the link you can read more about it then continue with
Free Download on the right>>Continue Download at next page
Basically it
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
Select Manual updating when installing
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection Status" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
or again, click on Protection Startus>>enable all protection

OTListIt2.exe
  • Double-click OTListIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click the Cleanup! button
  • Select Yes to reboot Now
Back in Windows
Can you run a Fresh scan and save logfile with Hijackthis and post the new log
Let me know  how things are now running please

Alright, I finally had a chance to get all those last instructions done. Everything seems to be running better, except windows automatic updater started to download some security updates and never gave me the option to install them.. which seemed kinda odd.

How do you have your Automatic updates set up?
Go into Windows Control Panel>>Automatic Updates>>Are you set to AutoMatic?

It could be it's a big download, as I don't see Service Pack 3 installed as of yet, which could be the one it's downloading, it may prompt in the next 24 hours to install

Try the following:
Instead of rebooting your computer, try shutting down instead, it may be waiting for a shutdown to install any updates ready for your computer

I take it your copy of XP is legal?

I had it set to notify me of updates but to let me download and install.  Looks like shutting down the computer did finish the install on those updates, the first set of updates installed right after I downloaded them, so that's what threw me off.

Yep, this is a legal copy of windows, it's just an old computer and I don't update it very often.  But it looks like it's working as intended, since the downloads did install on shut down.

So everything should be alright then?
Just give me one shout back to let me know everything is fine, I'll lock this topic afterwards

Well everything seems alright, unless you think we should check my husbands computer as well, his runs Vista, and it's newer so I was assuming it was probably secure.

Actually, I forgot about his computer
Why not post a Hijackthis log from his computer to this thread

Take note: One thing I should of mentioned, if you did think you had a keylogger
I strongly suggest you change all online passwords to gaming, banking, etc... from a clean computer

Again, thanks so much for your help, we've already changed our passwords to longer more secure ones and will definitely be making a fresh set of passwords once we know we're all clean.

Ok, here's the log for his computer:

Let's look at a couple logs from OTListit
Just to see what needs updating, etc...

Download OTListIt2 by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Close all windows and RIGHT click  on OTListIt2.exe and choose to "Run as Administrator"
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTListIt2.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
NOTE: Extras.txt should post with no problems
IF you do have problems with posting back the OTListIt2.txt file, because of an error from the message board
Please upload it in a reply using the UPLOAD>>BROWSE buttons

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

« Reply #17 on: May 19, 2009, 01:19:07 PM »
We just have a couple Empty Run key values to remove
Right click on OTListIt2.exe and choose to "Run as Admin"

RIGHT CLICK on OTListIt2.exe on destkop and choose to "Run As Administrator"
Copy the contents of the paths below in Blue to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

:OTLI
O4 - HKLM..\Run: [] File not found
O4 - HKCU..\Run: [] File not found

:files
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk

:commands

  • Return to OTListIt2, right click in the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window (under the light green bar) and choose Paste.
  • Then Click the red Run Fix button.
  • A fix log in Notepad will appear. Copy and Paste the contents of that log back here
  • Close OTListIt2

Looks good, now to update a couple bits of software you have installed

1. Click the Start button to open your Start Menu.
2. When the Start Menu opens click on the Control Panel menu option.
3. When the Control Panel window opens click on the Uninstall a program option under the Programs category. If you are using the Classic View of the Control Panel, then you would double-click on the Programs and Features icon instead.

Close down all Browser windows
Uninstall
Adobe Reader 7.1.0 and
Javaâ„¢ SE Runtime Environment 6

Reboot the computer when you have removed both the above
Back in Windows
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
  • Scroll down to where it says "JRE 6 Update 13".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows, beside Platform:>>Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Then from your desktop right-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe and choose to "Run as Admin" to install the newest version.
Afterwards: Again, on this computer you should do the following
Update Adobe Reader
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Again, the extra note  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Again, with Vista 32bit, you should add SpywareBlaster to your protection software
SpywareBlaster  by JavaCool
At the link you can read more about it then continue with
Free Download on the right>>Continue Download at next page
Basically it
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
Select Manual updating when installing
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection Status" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
or again, click on Protection Startus>>enable all protection

Do you have any AntiVirus software to install on this computer?
It's not safe being online without proper protection
Do you need a free solution?
