Please help!
« on: January 07, 2010, 11:17:34 PM »
Hi.  My little brother's computer has been having huge malfunctions.  After about five minutes, it freezes up.  He used to have the "Desktop Defender 2010" virus on his computer, which I got rid of (or so I thought) by using malwarebytes.  While the Desktop Defender is gone, everything has been slow and freezes very easily.

Here is the log:

I apologize to do another post, but my father's computer is also having similar problems (this one does not freeze, however).  Here is the log:

hi again, can you do the following
If you happen to have an old copy of ComboFix, can you delete it, it will do no good

Then do the following regardless if you had a copy or if you don't have one
Download ComboFix from this location:

Link 1
Save it ONLY to your Desktop

      --------------------------------------------------------------------
Temporarily Disable your AntiVirus/AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with this tool

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply

NOTE: Do not mouseclick inside ComboFix window as it's running, it may cause it to stall
ComboFix will/may run again on startup, it will prompt that it's creating a log
This process could take up to 10 minutes, let it run uninterrupted please

With the log from ComboFix, can you also include a fresh log from Hijackthis

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Are you running ComboFix right from the desktop as I suggested
Or are you trying to run it from a CD or USB drive?

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

OK, Let's try this again
Edit>>I don't see anywhere where I asked you to uninstall AVG?

I need you to temporarily disable AVG's protections, as it is probably interfering
To disable the Resident Shield, please:

    * Open AVG User Interface from it's icon by the clock
    * Double-click on the Resident Shield.
    * Un-tick the option Resident Shield active.
    * Save the changes.

I need you to rename Combofix during download
1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

From this LINK redownload ComboFix

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

That's looking better, but can I have you still do the following
Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Under the Update tab>>Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.

  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

With that log from MBAM
Can you also do the following
Again, temporarily disable AVG's realtime protection, so it won't interfere
Then,
Go to the following link ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use

  • Click Start

  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start

  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked

  • Click Scan (This scan can take awhile, so please be patient)

  • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt

  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic
