iexpolore.exe and malware defense trojan
« on: January 27, 2010, 04:15:48 PM »
This is my first post on this website, and boy am i glad i found ya'll. I've been looking on other sites trying to fit pieces together of what exactly the problem is with my computer, but then i saw how specific guestolo was in his explaination of how to fix the problem. So before i start with the problem, I'd like to say thank you to whoever is out there helping regular folks like us.

Now it started with the malware defense trojan, which i didn't realize was a trojan until halfway through installing it. Then i opened up my task manager and found a suspicious iexplore.exe running, suspicious because first, i wasnt running internet explorer and second, because after i closed it, it reopened. Now i've downloaded and installed malwarebyte's ad-aware and ccleaner, but malwarebytes won't work. The other two found a few problems and cleaned them up but i'm still pretty sure something is wrong with the computer since malwarebytes won't open. What's more, every time i seach for help on google and click on a link, it takes me to the linked site, and then automatically fowards me somewhere else.

Anyways, i have an AMD 64 3700+ , HP Pavillion a1330e , XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 2

here is the hijackthis log:

Darn, it does
Try the following,
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=5SYK1R1T

See if you can get that one to work
Wait 45sec for regular download link

Woops, posted at the same time, yup, if you right click on the zip file and save link
That usually works

I have a few minutes till dinner is ready
In the meantime, can you do the following:

since you already have Malwarebytes installed
Go to it's install directory, typically C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Make sure your set to show known file extensions
In Explorer click on TOOLS>>Folder Options>>View
Untick "Hide extensions for known file types"
Apply and Ok it

Right click on mbam.exe and rename it to something like
rkthak.exe

Try then runing malwarebytes
If it will run, do the following
  • Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.

  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

That was enormously helpful. I've finally got the malwarebytes scan running, and hopefully that takes care of it. I'll post the logs up for you after its done.

Before I set to do dishes  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />
Can you next try the following:

If you happen to have an older version of ComboFix, please delete it

Then, Download ComboFix from only this location:

Link 1

Save it ONLY to your Desktop

      --------------------------------------------------------------------
Temporarily Disable your AntiVirus/AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with this tool

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply

NOTE: Do not mouseclick inside ComboFix window as it's running, it may cause it to stall
ComboFix will/may run again on startup, it will prompt that it's creating a log
This process could take up to 10 minutes, let it run uninterrupted please

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling firefox, tried using it in safe-mode (only kept on for a couple seconds) The firefox website says do a "clean reinstall" but i basically did that. I completely uninstalled firefox and all personal settings. then restarted, then installed a newly downloaded firefox 3.6. still didnt work.

do the following, delete combofix on destkop
Then try this
1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

From this LINK Download ComboFix

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Svchost.com
Important, try renaming before you actually download
Save it to your desktop

Then try running Svchost.com (Combofix) as suggested earlier
