Computer Problems.
« on: May 01, 2010, 11:54:33 PM »
Basically Im posting today because my computer lately has been having some issues with my cpu fluctuating between 100% and around 5% constantly and sitting at 100% for long periods of time even with everything I can manage to disable off. Also my memory is at 36% full at start up. I recently took the computer in to have it serviced for an issue with a power cord and the guy at the store suggested it was a virus issue. I have run scans using a few programs but haven't found anything besides some minor spyware which was removed and apparently isn't causing the problems. I guess I'm just wondering if it is a fixable issue or of it is a problem with my hardware and I need a new computer. I also would like to avoid having to reformat my computer as I do not have a physical copy of Windows Vista or 7 (cannot afford at the moment) and XP does not seem to work on this laptop. Well here's the HiJackThis Log and here's me hoping you can help me. Thank you.

I don't see AntiVirus software installed
Can we do the following
Using Firefox, go to the following link
ESET Online Scanner

Click on the Button "Eset Online Scanner"
A new window will open, Download and save to your desktop
esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe

Right click on 'esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe' and choose to "Run as Administrator"
Put a tick in "Yes, I accept the Terms of Use" then click START

Eset will download components
When done click START again

Downloading of Virus signature database will begin
Depending on your connection speed, this can take awhile
When complete the scan will start
This scan can take some time, so be patient

Once the scan is completed, you may close the window

Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt

Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Are you sure it overheated?
Is this a Desktop or Laptop computer?
Is the inside of the computer clean of dust bunnies, etc ....??

I see you have possibly been installing illegal software, a good chance where the slowdowns and excessive CPU is coming from, your option to install it, but it does have it's consequences

Any improvement in the computer?
Why don't you have any AntiVirus software installed? Do you need a free version?

I'm 90% sure it overheated considering it was super hot when it shut off. It has done it before it in the past but only like once or twice. It is an Acer laptop. Generally I have an external fan running to cool it down as it doesn't seem to have any decent internal cooling system or even a fan and it gets very hot very quickly. The dust part I am not sure about, but as it is a laptop I would be hesitant to open up the computer myself to check. Also, I haven't seen any improvements since the scan.

OK the illegal software thing...that is like the only time I have done that as I needed to edit some photos for a project for my Art class (Visual Art Major so it was important), but seeing as how I was in high school at the time I could not buy it myself. Yes I know it was stupid, but school is more important to me and Microsoft Paint wasn't working for me. Also, that was over a year ago so I don't think that would have caused the problem now, but of course I could be wrong.

The anti virus software I'm working on. I had ad aware and spybot installed but I uninstalled them to see if they were causing the problems which is why they didn't show up. I also have a copy of Norton unactivated I can use that someone bought me, but since the computer is going so slow I didn't wanna install it yet cause idk if the key is a one time use. (So no I didn't steal it this time >_<) Also I know Norton probably sucks from what I have heard from many people, but my mother bought it for me so I would feel bad if I didn't use it. Feel free to recommend anything better then the ones I had or Norton. I can try to purchase ones as well.

I guess I'll just ask. Should I just attempt a reload of windows? I may be able to get a copy of Vista if I can call the manufacturer of my laptop and get my Vista code that wore off the bottom from the computer being super hot...So if I can do that I may be able to get a cheap copy which was what was holding me back in the past. Now I would still like to avoid that of course, but not having a somewhat decently functioning computer is causing me problems and I'm getting kinda desperate. So do you think that is my best bet to purge whatever this is as it doesn't seem to be getting detected by anything we try. Also I'm guessing it would prove if it was a hardware issue and save us both some time.

Sorry if I'm sounding like I'm giving up or if I sound rude, but I've been at my wits end for weeks now and just had nasal surgery a few days ago so I've been sitting all home everyday bored out of my mind cause I can't do anything on my darn computer and it really sucks. (The pain killers are nice though xP) Anyways I think I'm going to try to go to sleep now. Thank you for your time and I hope you can continue to help me.

PS: I know my personal problems aren't affecting my computer I just wanted to explain and put things in more context. Sorry if I went into to much of a rant and it was bothersome. If so let me know and I'll stick to business from now on. Thanks again.

Can you clean boot your PC and see if you still have problems with your computer
Here's a link
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Just stick with STEP 1 for now and see how it runs

Computer Problems.

Sorry I have been gone for awhile but I tried the clean boot and it didn't do anything. When I restarted it after I turned off the stuff it was still running at high cpu constantly and jumping from 4% to 100% even if I didn't open anything except for Task Manager. Also the Physical Memory starts out at 20% or so full at start up then slowly climbs the longer the computer is on to around 30% then will sometimes go back down then go back up. Even if I'm not opening anything it will do that. I don't know if that is normal but it seems kinda odd. The only processes that seem to take up any large amount of memory are svchost.exe which there are about 10+ open all the time but those are just from windows correct? Only reason I ask is because the guy at the store I took it to said that was what was causing the problems. He said it was a virus pretending to be that process, but I can't seem to find any reference to that online so I don't know what to think. I'm at a loss for what to do now hopefully you have some more ideas. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> And thanks again for all the help.
