Why don't we try resetting IE and see if that fixes you up

In Internet Explorer click on TOOLS>>Internet Options>>ADVANCED tab

Click on RESET
You will get a prompt, put a tick next to "Delete Personal Settings"
Click OK and let it run
When it's done, restart IE
When it completely loads, follow the prompts to setup IE8
Click NEXT>>Select YES if you want IE as your default browser, click NEXT
Turn on Suggested sites, I select NO, your option
Select "Use Express Settings" click on FINISH

The Intranet prompt you can left click it and tell it to Not show you it again

Manually navigate to your preferred Home page
Once there go to TOOLS>Internet Options>>Under GENERAL, select Use Current Page
Apply and OK it
Go to TOOLS>>Manage Addons
TOOLBARS and Extensions, highlight one at a time and Enable
Unless you have AOL, do not enable it

Then Select SEARCH PROVIDERS>>and select FIND MORE SEARCH PROVIDERS at the bottom
When the IE page loads, Find Yahoo! Search suggestions in the list and select Add to IE
Then you can go back to Addons and highlight Yahoo and set it as default

Let me know how that goes
I clicked on RESET for IE 8, but it didn’t give me the option to "Delete Personal Settings". Then I restarted it, but when I restarted IE8, it didn’t give me the option/prompt to setup IE8, but it also didn’t give me the error message about bing either being my default search engine either.  My homepage was already set to my old/original homepage (yahoo)when I restarted, but I went through the steps you suggested anyway. It still doesn’t remember my log-on and passwords from sites that I have visited when I close IE8 and bring it back up and go to that site, even thought I tell it to remember me.

I am still getting the error message from Outlook 2007 and still unable to do updates from Microsoft. I am starting to wonder if it isn’t more time effective at this point to just reformat my HD and reinstall everything.  If you think that is best, I have a few other questions for you about how to save some of my setting file for different programs.

Can you try creating a new user account with Admin privileges
START>>Control Panel>>User Accounts>Create a New account

Sign out of this account and sign into the new account, see if you still have problems with IE8

Check with Windows updates and see if your getting errors also

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

I am still getting the error message from Outlook 2007

What error message is that?

In your original account, can you check to ensure that Autocomplete is properly set
In IE click on Tools > Internet Options > Content > Autocomplete > Settings and checking the User names and passwords on forms and Ask me before saving passwords checkboxes

Can we recreate Export.bat again

As before, create export.bat, paste the following info inside it then run it and post it's contents

Code: [Select]
@echo off
regedit /e C:\cp.reg "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders"
more C:\cp.reg >> C:\Display.txt
regedit /e C:\cp.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders"
more C:\cp.reg >> C:\Display.txt
notepad C:\Display.txt
del /q c:\cp.reg
del /q C:\Display.txt

Can you download, save and run this Microsoft Fixit tool
Do you get any error messages running it?

Can you reboot after running it and see if you still get errors

http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9708107

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Can you download, save and run this Microsoft Fixit tool
Do you get any error messages running it?

Can you reboot after running it and see if you still get errors

I was able to download and run Fixit, but am still having the same issues.  Is it time to reformat?  lol

Like to try another tool
Download/Save then extract to your desktop
Dial-A-Fix

Open Dial-A-Fix folder you extracted
Double click on Dial-A-Fix.exe to run it
You may receive a prompt about IE8, ignore it and the request to email
from the Main window of Dial-A-Fix
Select the GREEN (Select All) button on the bottom, then click on GO
Ensure Date/Time are correct when prompted then click OK
Let the tool continue, when it's done Close the main window

Note: at the section IE/OE/shell/wmp
you will get about 7 prompts regarding registering .dlls
Ignore them and click OK

When the tool has finished, let me know what problems still remain
Try Windows Updates,etc..

I was able to download and run Dial-A-Fix, but all of the same issues remain.  I did notice that instead of 7 prompts regarding the registered .dlls, I had 14.  I dont know if that is significant, but thought I would point that out.

Is there a way of having you telnet into my PC to take a look at what I am seeing firsthand?

I'm not sure what else to try at this point, would you consider backing up and reformat/install?
Don't forget to backup your bookmarks, and possibly email
It may take less time

I think that would be the best solution, but I would need your help in backing up bookmarks, YIM archives, and any other configuration files that you can think of.

I thank you for you help!!!

Check out that link to help in backing up your Outlook.pst file

As far as Yahoo IM, I don't use it, but take a look at the following

In addition, here's a tutorial to help you format and clean install

Great help, and many THANKS!!!

I just have one more question.  I have an IBM Laptop, and I have the recovery CDs from when I bought it, but I also have a standard copy of XP Professional.  I don't think I need all of the crap that comes with the IBM recovery CDs. Would you suggest I use them anyway or would you personally use the standard XP CD w/o all of the extras?

That really is your option, one thing to keep in mind, after the install everything is more likely to work with the recovery discs as they are made for your computer
As in drivers, etc......
I'm not sure what other stuff IBM puts into their computer
But after you finish the clean install you can come back here and we can go over what you don't need installed

Thanks for all of your help!!!  I appreciate it. I have finally re-imaged my laptop and loaded all of my programs. Everything seems to be working fine, except that sometimes when I am typing (in any program) I can type 2-3 words before they appear on the screen, and my system seems to be using more of my RAM than it use to. I have 1.5 Gigs of RAM, and when I go to Task Manager, it is always maxed out, and seems that iexplore.exe is the biggest offender.

Let's see what's installed and running
Download OTL.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.
 • Close all windows and double click on OTL.exe to run it
 • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
 • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
 • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

NOTE: If you have trouble, or an error message trying to post the logs
Can you upload it to a reply box
In a Reply, select "Browse..." on the bottom right and then navigate to the file and select it
Then click "Upload"
