Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately.

Ensure to boot into Normal windows
Then
Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Open the UPDATE tab and "Check for Updates"
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.    
  • After updating, open the SCAN tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.    
     
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.    
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)    
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.    
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

Ran TFC and it removed 64 mb

Malwarebytes give error when I click on "Check for Updates" Error 732 contact support team.

Here's a suggestion when receiving that error from MBAM

1. Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
2. Restart your computer (very important).
3. Download and run this utility. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-clean.exe
4. It will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to).
5. After the computer restarts, install the latest version from here. http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button

After running Combo Fix, everything seems to be running faster. I haven't seen the 'background' program running, but I haven't used this computer very much yet. I noticed that g2mdlhlpx.exe was removed, maybe that was it.

Ensure you still have a copy of ComboFix on your desktop
Then do the following:
Go to START>>RUN>>Copy and paste the next command then hit OK

[color="#FF0000"]ComboFix /uninstall[/color]

This will uninstall ComboFix and it's components

In addition: I want to check on some of your software, ensuring it's updated to help plug security holes

Can you do the following please:
Download and unzip to your desktop InstalledPrograms.zip
Double click on InstalledPrograms.vbs

Click OK at the IP prompt and click YES to view the results now
A text file will open, can you copy and paste back here the whole contents

In addition:
Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Currently I have a reminder from Adobe Reader to run the update. I also have a reminder from Automatic Updates. I have not run the updates yet. I was waiting for your instruction.

Run the Adobe Reader update, after updating, reopen A. Reader and click on HELP>>Check for Updates just to ensure your right up to date
Install the Windows updates also, it's important to keep up to date to keep your computer secure

Let's also do the following:
To make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player installed:
1. To uninstall an older version, download this file to your Desktop: uninstall_flash_player.exe
2. Quit ALL running applications, including all Internet Explorer or other browser windows, and messenger applications (like AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger).
3. Double-click on the file you've downloaded to uninstall Flash.

You can then delete the uninstaller after it is successful
Go HERE
Download and save to desktop the installer to the latest version of SpywareBlaster
DO NOT install it yet

Open your version of SpywareBlaster, in the Main menu click on "Disable All Protection"
When done, exit SpywareBlaster
Enter your Add and Remove programs and remove SpywareBlaster 4.2

After removal, reboot your computer, back in Windows

double click on the installer to SpywareBlaster 4.4
    Select Manual updating when installing
    After installation,
Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection Status" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"[/list]
IMPORTANT>>"Check for updates every couple of weeks or so"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
or again, click on Protection Status>>enable all protection

Go to this site: Install Adobe Flash Player, and choose Agree and install now. This will install the newest version of Flash for your browser
Note: I recommend you uncheck an optional install (Free McAfee Security Scan or Free Google Toolbar).

I finally got around to doing these last instructions.  There was also an update for Java which I ran.

I had to get a new computer a couple of months ago because this one became unstable, so fixing this one was not a top priority. I'd still like to get it working again.

I have a new problem now with Outlook crashing and not willing to open. Is that something you can help with? Should I start a new thread for that?

Brief discription. Outlook encounters an error when trying to open. Message says it will open in Safe Mode. When I click ok, it encounters another error and offers to do Detect and Repair. After I run that, it  says there are no problems found.

Thanks, I was able to figure this one out on my own. Maybe what I found out can help you too. If you recall, I  originally suspected Outlook was part of my overall problem with the hard drive running all the time. Although your help made my computer run faster, there was still something running at times. Then Outlook crashed and wouldn't open at all and I found out that the my profile became corrupted and that's why the program wouldn't open. When I created a new profile Outlook opened. After half of the day yesterday reading support items, I eventually found an Inbox cleaning tool that is located within Outlook. It scanned the data file and fixed the errors. Immediately after running it, I noticed that my hard drive went quiet and everything was running way faster. That made a huge difference in performance. Here's the link, hope it helps
