Dell, Itunes and Locking Up
« Reply #20 on: September 04, 2010, 09:29:01 AM »
Could the problem be in my audio playback? Sound/device driver?

I am running an audio cd now to see if there are any playback problems because I've had a problem in the past where the audio CD locked up similar to what happens in ITunes.

Seems to be playing well in Windows Media Player. The songs are playing in order off the CD too which is different than what it was doing when I was having the CD lock-up/freeze issue. The player would jump around and pick and choose songs from the audio CD.

I have also deleted Quick Time Player and reinstalled it as some of the other on-line sources say this is supposed to address the lock-up/freeze issue. However, it has not helped with this problem. Is it time to throw in the towel regarding the ITunes problem?

I could possibly transfer the ITunes Folder to another computer although the one I have in mind to transfer to has W7 OS on it and this one, that is, the Dell with the problem, operates on XP. I don't know if this is an issue when transfering ITunes Folder or not.

Do you have any other ideas? i.e. throw out the computer?

The audio CD is playing the songs. However, after I entered the last Post, the CD played the songs 1-5 in order on the CD, then jumped back to song 3 on the audio CD and began playing that.

Is the audio playback the same in playing a music CD and playing a song on the computer stored in the ITunes folder; or, are they using different drivers etc.?

Try this suggestion, not sure if it will work, but it's helped some
Open Itunes,
Click on EDIT>>Preferences>>Devices tab
tick the box "Prevent Ipods, Iphones,and Ipads from syncing automatically"
OK it and close Itunes, try reopening and see if it helps

I did do the EDIT Preferences Devices tab. It froze up the first time after I tried running the ITunes program. I am running it now though and it is playing. Assuming that it will freeze again, hey, maybe it won't but...

What do you think of this solution?

Problem #3
iTunes will not open or unexpectedly quits

Cause: Corrupted preference files or possibly out-of-date plug-ins.
Solution: Remove Preferences and Third-Party Plug-ins. Delete the following folders:

•C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username Here\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
•C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username Here\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
•C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info

How does one go about "Removing Preferences and Third-Party Plug-ins?  Also, I could not locate the three folders that this solution says to delete. What do you think?

Well, why not try what Itunes suggested
Ensure Itunes is closed and not running

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Delete those folders
C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
•C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
•C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info

Go back and Hide hidden files/folders

Open Itunes, windows installer may run, let it finish, follow the prompts
It may want to again search your computer for songs,etc... let that finish
See if that helps

I deleted those files and the program is now on it's third song. I have time for another song or so. I will let you know if this "fix" continues to work.

Thank you for all of your attention, time and expertise. It is greatly appreciated.

Just a double check on versions of software your running

Another possibility
Here's the latest version of Itunes
iTunes   Ver: 10.0.0.68

Your running
iTunes Ver: 9.2.1.5

Try the following
Ensure Itunes is closed, let's remove some unnecessary items in Add/Remove programs
Close down all browser windows
First remove
My Way Search Assistant

Then for security reasons, you should update Adobe Reader
Next uninstall
Adobe Reader 8.2.4

Finally remove
iTunes Ver: 9.2.1.5

Reboot the computer

Back in Windows
let's get Adobe Reader updated
Go to the following link
http://get.adobe.com/reader/

UNTICK the option to also install McAfee Security Scan and/or Google toolbar or similiar
Download and save to desktop the installer for the latest version of A. Reader
Double click on the installer to install
After successfully installing, you can delete the installer on desktop
Can you open Adobe Reader and click on HELP>>CHECK FOR UPDATES and install any update if found to ensure you are right up to date

Afterwards
Here's the link for the latest version of Itunes
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Try the latest version and see if you have any luck with it

Before I follow the steps you outlined, the ITunes Program has been running properly for almost two hours this morning. Should I see if this continues before I perform all of your steps; or, should I remove the unnecessary programs but hold off on updating the ITunes version. i.e do all of the steps except update Itunes. Or, should I just update Itunes and see if the program continues to work?

FYI:

I have been keeping an eye on my Event Viewer too, i.e. Run Eventvwr.  There was a long Warning message:

Windows saved user D2F****\Mark registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the Local Service or Netw Service Account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Event:1517 This Warning message appeared periodically going back for days. I don't know if this means anthing. I cleared the Event Viewer log and the application log has been blank for awhile. Also, since the message mentined Registry, I temporarily disabled Registry Booster program from running during this current successful run of ITunes.

Could Registry Booster interfere with this application or any other running application?

Thanks.

When I delete the ITunes Ver: 9.2.1.5 before installing the update, it won't remove my songs, right?

When attempting to delete My Way Search Assistant from Add/Rem Programs, got an error loading...The specfied module could not be found. Should I try and locate and delete manually?

Take a look at the proper complete removal of ITUNES, take note of the following
Quote
iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925?viewlocale=en_US

You may want to use that link and remove all Itunes, Quick,etc
Start from fresh installing all of them

Remove it from the Add/Remove programs list if that is the option, Malwarebytes removed most of it for you

I followed your steps in prior post.

The only "glitch" in any of the steps was in attempting to delete the My Way Search Assistant program through the Add/Remove Programs option. The error message was, "Error loading C:\Program1\mywaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\descras.dll
The specified..."

Sorry about the last Post. It ended abruptly because my computer froze up while running the ITunes program following my reinstallation etc.

I guess that we are back to the drawing board....
