Does anyone know a way to set up two sound cards under windows 2000? Better yet, what about assigning programs to specific cards?

I suppose two sound cards  won\'t work,because you cannot play a sound file  with 2 sound cards at the same time , they also use different wdm files.
The only thing you could try is install one , disable it in the device manager ,install the second  , and use  only one or the other ,by disabling  one or the other .who knows

Well i have used my onboard audio and a creative card at the same time. They could play the same .mp3 at the same time. I just installed the drivers for both and installed the zhit off the disc for the onboard audio(ie. player and stuff). I NEVER use any creative software(to me it sux). Winamp is what i use to play files.

im not sure why you want to do this. I could ask some people at school because some of the computers have 2 or 3 sound cards in them.

btw are the sound cards identical ??? Does one support 24bit/32bit and the other only 16bit??

Ever thought about using a mac for what your trying :-)

Anyways l8r. (btw i dont personally have a mac)

I have a sb audigy 2 (pci) and an ac97 on board .I tried to install both and  I had to do a safe boot with the last  good configuration.So I uninstalled the drivers from my ac97 and disabled it in the bios .
I won\'t say you\'re wrong , but for me it didn\'t work , so I don\'t advise it .
As you say what\'s the good of it .

hmm...to be honest i didnt do anything special durign installation. I do it everytime on this motherboard. That is install the onboard audio drivers. I did it to compare onbaord to the SB ...i wouldnt ever used onboard audio...although today im forced to :-(.

Anyways i used a copy of the decoder for the onboard audio. I used M.A.D. winamp decoder. I copied the entire winamp directory for the test.

Still dont know what you need 2 for. Unless you have someone else in your place that likes to listen to one thing and you like to listen to another. Then it would come in handy.

That\'s the reason I tried the on board audio too , to see the difference .
I allways get a new sb in the cheapest version , because the card is allways the same and I have an old soundworks speaker system  5.1 . My sound is also connected to my  hi fi system . Good sound is important for me (every body has his own opinion about this) .

I have setup two identical 16 bit sound cards and used my pc to DJ. I installed
the cards one at a time and the drivers each card was installed.

I then ran 2 instances of winamp and went into  Winamps right click menu
OPTIONS - PREFERENCES. Goto OUTPUT in each instance and click configure
on the OUTPUT plugin in use for each soundcard. Make sure you don't
choose the same one in both instances of winamp.

It even works with two different soundcards.
 
Works under Win95/98SE and 2000.

I have tested it.

i know this is pushing the same question, and i assume its the same answer,
but theoretically, can i set up as many sound cards in a box as i want..
ie all the slots?

i am wanting to do a sound art project and run 3 machines with 5 cards in each.
all outputing different audio from winamp.

thoughts?

don't be stupid..... OF COURSE YOU CAN !!!!
just use the DirectSound Output plug-in of winamp...!!! just start winamp as many times as you have soundcards and configure them right as 'classified' said... I myself use 3 soundcards (2 Creatives and 1 onboard AC'97) and it works without problems

I only miss a program in witch I can control all my sound devices at the same time.

(I use Windows XP proffesional but thats beside the point, it works on all Windows OS with winamp installed)

How do you open two instances of Winamp.  I have a Audigy 2 with a 5.1 system and another boston 2.1 digital system, i want to operate them both and thought that I could do it with the audigy 2 because the audigy has the 3 ouputs for the 5.1 system, then it also has a digital out, which i presume could be used for the other boston 2.1 digital system???  Any thoughts, questions, comments, concerns would be appreciated.

Okay, Ive got a question. Heres what im trying to do: I want to install multiple sound cards, one being a SB audigy 2 platinum and then just  any cheap one. Could i run a set of speakers out of each card so theoretically i could (using multiple monitors as well) asign one card (SB Audigy) for all my everyday use i.e. music, dvd, games and then run the other set to specifically used for only one type of game, flight sim 2004? thanks
