Spy Sweeper finding self replicating virus
« on: November 11, 2010, 05:18:59 PM »
Hi, a friend asked me to take a look at her computer. She said that her Email Removed account was compromised. Her e-mail account was sending out links to her contact list. She also complained of slow computer performance. I wanted to get you a hijack log. I was going to scan the computer with malware bytes, avg, and spybot search and destroy. I was also going to run OTL and combofix. Before I did anything, I wanted to post a hijack. I tried to download the executable and the message I got was.

Spy Sweeper
X A potentially unwanted program is attempting to access the file

Mal/Behav-067 is attempting to access the file system.

A virus is a self-replicating program that can infect computer code, documents, or applications. While some virues are purposefully malignant, others are more of a nuisance, replicating uncontrollably and inhibit system performance.

If you do not recognize the name of the program we recommend blocking this action.

I then decided to download the installer and run that. I got the same issue when installing it. I decided to allow the installer to run by allowing the acess of Mal/Behav-067.

The results of hijack this are...

Download OTL.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Close all windows and double click on OTL.exe to run it
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

For some reason the internet stopped working upon restart of the computer. I tried disabling and re-enabling the wirless connection, no go. I tried connecting the laptop via ethernet cable and still nothing. The wirless network is working fine. I did run cmd, then did ip release, the netsh winsock reset resetlog.txt, the netsh winsock reset command all of those and still nothing. I decided to transferr the files you requested me to download and run via external hard drive. I ran Malwarebytes and restarted. The computer is back on the net. Here are the results.

I take back what I said about the internet working. It worked, then after a restart I can't get it back. I have made sure that in the tcp/ip all the settings are correct. I also checked the internet options and they are correct. Everything is connect automatically and the computer is not trying to go through proxy servers or anything of the nature. I'm not sure what gives with the internet. It worked when I first plugged the computer in and put in my network key, then after a restart it stopped. I played around with it for a while and couldn't get it to go. Then after the malware scan it worked. Now it doesn't again. (Didn't do anything but a restart) Really confused.

Spy Sweeper finding self replicating virus
« Reply #6 on: November 12, 2010, 10:03:57 AM »
Can you disable the protection software from SpySweeper
I don't use it, but this is the instructions for
SPY SWEEPER version 5

    * Open SpySweeper and click Shield Settings on the right (or Shields on the left, depending what screen you're on).
    * Click Internet Explorer and uncheck all items.
    * Click Windows System and uncheck all items.
    * Click Hosts File and uncheck all items.
    * Click Startup Programs and uncheck all items.
    * Exit the program.

In addition, ensure that you temporarily disable TrendMicro's protections

Then, transfer to DESKTOP
ComboFix from the following location

Link 1
Save it ONLY to your Desktop

      --------------------------------------------------------------------
Temporarily Disable your AntiVirus/AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with this tool

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply

NOTE: Do not mouseclick inside ComboFix window as it's running, it may cause it to stall
ComboFix will/may run again on startup, it will prompt that it's creating a log
This process could take up to 10 minutes, let it run uninterrupted please

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

I got a disclaimer saying that there was no system restore set up on the computer or the alternative system restore needed to be updated. Combofix needed to connect to the internet to be able to update the programs. If I said no, it would not attempt to fix any serious infections. I had to hit no because of my internet connection issue.

Spy Sweeper finding self replicating virus
« Reply #8 on: November 12, 2010, 01:59:24 PM »
Just to let you know, it's the strangest thing.... I let the computer idle for about 20 minutes and the wireless internet connected. I know it says it's on auto connect and it will keep trying to connect to the network, but it's really strange that it would connect like that. I would suspect a hardware issue, but the card is picking up four bars. I'm going to check and make sure my router is set to a mixed mode. Although, that shouldn't have anything to do with it because it can connect. If it were on G only and this wasn't a g capable nic it shouldn't connect ever.

Since you appear to be online now, can I have you do the following
Open again Malwarebytes Antimalware
This time, open the UPDATE tab, CHECK FOR UPDATES

After updating, Open the Scanner tab, select Quick Scan
Run the scan and remove anything found
Post back the fresh log from MBAM

In addition, reopen OTL.exe
Run a Quick Scan and post it's new log that opens

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

It's looking good, but can you still do the following
Temporarily disable your protection with AVG so it won't interfere with this scanner

ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log:
OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK
esets_scanner_update returned -1 esets_gle=53251

That is the log. Something happened during the scan. First time around it scanned to 99% I was waiting for it to finish and it was still going through program files. Any way when I came back to the computer it was off. I thought it was something where the computer was idle and it would shut off for a certain amount of time. I went to power options and changed everything to never and re-did the scan. Same deal I left came back and it was off again.

Not sure whats going on. I will run it again and sit there and babysit it. I did notice the first time around it found 2 viruses, I don't know if it fixed it or not, but I did check the quarantine folder and it has several items in it.

No, I ran it again and the scanner will go all the way now and not show any viruses found. It still will shut off the computer though. I still haven't seen it actually shut off though. (I am hoping Eset automatically fixed the virues from before when it found them)

I am going to have to run it again because, I was babysitting it for an hour and then I went to brush me teeth. When I came back the computer was off. I am now going to sit there from 50 minutes to an hour and a half and just watch that point. It seems to do it just after an hour. It's driving me crazy. Any other scanner I can run?

seems to be running well. I am just backing stuff up for my friend. I was a little worried about the entire eset scanner and the computer shutting off ordeal, but if you think im ok, I'm happy.

Any special instructions on how to remove anything?

I just want to run one last scanner
Then we'll update some software to ensure the computer is more secure
Scan With RKUnHooker
  • Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
Note: Since this is a RAR file, and you have WinRar installed, please Extract the contents to your desktop

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.

  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.

  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth, Files, Code Hooks,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.

  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File>> Save Report.

  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get a warning similiar to the below
Just ignore it if you do
"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"
