Failed XP Install
« on: February 13, 2003, 05:13:35 PM »
I installed XP on a roommates computer and it was running ok until my roommate rebooted the pc with the XP disk in the CD-ROM.  It booted from the CD and started preparing the drive for an XP installation.  He restarted the computer mid-preparation and took out the CD.  Now when attempting to boot it says it can not read any information from the HD.  Is there any way to re-write a boot sector or something on the disk without loosing any data?  Should I just go ahead and format and reinstall XP??  Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank You
  Ken

you can re-write the boot sector by booting off the XP cd and going into recovery console and running FIXBOOT, you can also fix the mbr by running FIXMBR (use at your own risk).

and you can also run \'MKDISKRAW 0\' to zero out the mbr on the hard drive and loss all information.

have fun.

Hi

I think you need to rebuild the boot sector....

Just re-install windows again... Don\'t choose repair go with with a clean install....
