PC won't boot - Loading PBR for descriptor 2 ... done
« on: January 21, 2011, 08:31:27 PM »
My Dell Dimension E510 won't boot any more.  I can get into the BIOS settings still and I can get to the Boot Device Menu but if I let it go any further, I see a message that I think reads:

Loading PBR for descriptor 2 ... done

It goes by so fast, I'm not really positive that that's what it says, but I'm close.  After that the screen goes blank.

From the Boot Device Menu I was able to run the Hard Drive diagnostics and all drives were found and were said to be okay.

I am unable to boot to the utility partition unfortunately.  When I try, I see the same, or similar message flash by:

Loading PBR for descriptor 2 ... done

and then the screen goes black.

How can I get this system going again?  I'm not sure what happened but I believe my wife did get suckered into responding positively to some malware that said in a dialog that a virus had been detected and did she want to wipe it out.

I believe something got wiped out and it wasn't the virus.

I actually made some progress on this on my own.  I used the Dell's Installation DVD to run Windows recovery.  I subsequently run FIXBOOT and then FIXMBR and the PC actually started just fine.

My ID seems to be fine.  My wife's idea however has definitely been affected.  And by ID I mean the environment when her ID is used to signon.

There's something called System Tool running on it.  The AVG anti-virus seems to be deactivated.  There's a Windows system tool saying the system's been infected but it's unable to run.  I'm not able to run msconfig from her ID either.

I'm currently running on my own ID and I ran highjack this.

I'm not sure what it'll show.  I may try to post another utilizing her ID but I'm not even sure I'll be able to run a browser from her ID right now.

PC won't boot - Loading PBR for descriptor 2 ... done
« Reply #3 on: January 22, 2011, 12:14:07 AM »
Made more progress.  I downloaded and ran Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and let it remove stuff while running in Windows Safe mode and my wife's ID is looking good right now.

PC won't boot - Loading PBR for descriptor 2 ... done
« Reply #5 on: January 22, 2011, 07:11:04 AM »
I did a few more things in the hopes of cleaning out more issues.

I ran SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, and Spybot Search and Destroy.

Both Malware detectors and fixers said they found issues even after I'd previously run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

So again, I've ran HJT and am posting it's log.  I don't know what all else to do so I'm done for now.

If anyone can take a look at this log and let me know if I need to do more, I'd sure appreciate it.

Although my wife has yet to use her ID, I'm using it right now and things seem fine.

Thanks,
Dale

« Reply #6 on: January 22, 2011, 02:09:00 PM »
Can you do the following for me please
Download OTL.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Close all windows and double click on OTL.exe to run it
  • Put a tick in "Scan all users"
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Looks good, can you do the following please
Let's ensure that Spybot's TeaTimer doesn't interfere in the following
disable SpybotSD TeaTimer:

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box.
Click Allow Change box if prompted
Close Spybot

You have CCleaner installed
Can you open it
Click on the TOOLS button on the left hand side

Highlight "System Tool2011"  in the Uninstall List and choose to Delete Entry
OK the prompt

Click on Cleaner button, then Run Cleaner, when it's done close CCleaner

Close all browser windows, Access your Add and Remove Programs and uninstall
Java™ 6 Update 14

Leave your browser windows closed, Open SpywareBlaster 4.2
As it's outdated, we should properly update
When SpywareBlaster open, under the main window
Click on "Disable All Protections"
When done, close SpywareBlaster and then uninstall it from Add/Remove programs

Come back here
Double  click on OTL.exe and Run it
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, copy/paste in the following in the quote box below. don't include the word Quote please
    Quote
    :OTL
    O3 - HKLM\..\Toolbar: (no name) - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - No CLSID value found.
    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c
    :Commands
    [EmptyFlash]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

On startup, Allow OTL to run if prompted
A log should open, you can just close it
Let's get the latest version of SpywareBlaster installed

SpywareBlaster  by JavaCool
At the link you can read more about it if you like then continue with
Free Download on the right>>Continue Download at next page
Basically it
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
Select Manual updating when installing
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection Status" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
IMPORTANT>>"Check for updates every couple of weeks or so"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
or again, click on Protection Startus>>enable all protection
You can delete the installer when done

Go to the following link
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
Click on the Free Java Download button
I normally do the Windows Offline installation

Let me know how things are running when the above is complete

« Reply #11 on: January 22, 2011, 07:04:26 PM »
Things seem to be fine.  My wife was using the system for a few hours even before I did the things you mentioned in your last note and she felt things were good.  Much better than before the system meltdown, if you will.

I really fell down on the job as far as keeping SpywareBlaster uptodate.  I'll have to make a point of updating it regularly from now on.  And hopefully my wife won't be fooled into allowing some malware on to our system again.  I've never seen anything do what happened to our PC before.  At least it appears we had no data loss whatsoever.  I had backups of everything up till Jan 8 but it would have been a hassle to have to use them.

Take care and thank you very much for your assistance,
Dale

Your welcome, let's go ahead and properly remove OTL.exe

I'll do it.

What about the Tea Timer thing I previously turned off?  Should I turn it back on?

Thanks again,
Dale

I think we can close this one out.  Thanks for your help.  I haven't typically needed help on my own PCs in the past but I sure did this time.
