First off, if your info is with this website, and Microsoft could be watching this website because a lot of things that are said on this site arent benificial to Microsoft, it isnt good to say you have a pirated version of XP. But overlooking that, I would say that it depends on your KEY numbers. If its the one for corporate edition that have been flying around the internet and can be found anywhere, then maybe. That KEY starts off with something like FQQ2 or something like that in it. That is a known leaked KEY, and unless you have some special way to get around it, microsoft wont let you download SP1 and some other updates. If you have one of the unknown KEYs id say you are fine. The main way to tell is if you can download SP1 or not.

OK, how about this:

M$ does not track down individuals, they will track down companies that are not using the licenses properly, and give then an opportunity to make it right before going to court. Next up they will track down anyone selling pirated software.

There are way too many people out there are running on OS’s that are pirated, and for MS to track them down and follow them around on the internet, HUMMM I don’t think so.

But just as a warning, if you ever plan on doing any programming and selling that, you better be FULLY legit. Programmers are constantly being checking for piracy.

I totally agree with you there

that is why all the programs I create are made either at my universtiy.... or in java on unix/ linux were MS cannot get ya http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

maybe I should apply for the MS student discount scheme http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

M$ api's are to date \"open\". This will obviously change and change VERY soon with vs.net r2 or wtfe.

M$ will track down ANYBODY. There is not hiearchy of \"pirates to catch\". It
is a matter of business ethics and when and why they might attack.  There
has bee indivdual's that do nothing but download stuff that have been
tracked down before. In any case it is a matter of production.

There is MANY programs that are written on pirated OS's im sure covered by
the GPL and even commercial software. M$ dont really care to attack a
end-user for it's the end-user that really clouds the majority of the population
into believing M$ is either the only operating system or the one to have. So
potentially piracy is a good thing on the consumer level since it really just
push's further the M$ product that in return can later make a consumer by
other m$ product's and if not atleast buy a newer computer with a preloaded
M$ operating system...this is true since they are alreadey used to how there
current M$ os works regardless of it being pirated or not, they will feel at home.

Only way they would attack you is if you made enough noise, for instance
this forum. They would only would to make a example out of you that would
in return just have their OS pirated even more by the publicity it would get
from the many news articles floating around the net about your case and
being attacked by M$...it would attach their name to yet more article's which
in return produce's publicity.

To pirate or not to pirate is a ? that can only be answered by your intent. If
your intent is to only do like 1 or 2 things with the OS...then by all means
pirate...however if you find that or realize that you might make that new
piece of software a \"home\"...then buy.

I program myself and do it on *nix...not because im afraid of piracy but
because almost all code runs cleaner and natively on a nix platform.

If you run windows and no other operating system....you could only possibly
know 5% of the software world. Computer OS's stretch from here to the red
sea.

Usually a feeling of intemidation will make someone only stick with 1 OS...and
of course just not being that very smart when it comes to computers. Of
course their is other valid reason's, like your a game programmer or you job
only requires you to use one OS...sure this is true...but is that person you?

Either way ...worry and dont worry...i guess it is just like anything else in life,
how pettish and bored does the attacker feel today.

Try the alternatives to M$ os's before it's too late, or else you will wind up
like your grandpa when your grandchild ask's you a ? about a computer. Nothing last's for ever...this includes any OS aswell.
