setupp.ini (crack) then CD-R bootbalbe?
« on: May 23, 2003, 03:06:30 AM »
Hi:

I got the info from the site on HOW-TO edit the i386/setupp.ini file so that the installation of Windows 2K Advanced Server will NOT ask or require a Product Key.  I did that by simply coping the entire CD to my hard drive and then using notepad to edit the file (making the change shown from this site).

Now, I have the complete CD with the ONE changed file on my HD.  When I use a burning program to copy all those files to a new BLANK CD-R .... that went OK too.  But, when I tried to restart the PC and BOOT from this new CD-R ... of course it failed (as I thought it would) because it was NOT a true bootable CD-R.

So, I then tried to make this CD-R all over again, but this time I used the bootable CD-R options that come with the burning software.  I was able to make a bootable CD-R (which boots to DOS), and that put me at the command prompt ..... I guess I could have installed the software from this point, but I have the following questions, and I am hoping that someone can tell me the best path:

#1:  If I simply have a CD-R (bootable or not bootable) that contains the correct I386 folder on it for a Microsoft OS (say in this example Win2k Adv. Server), and I am at a DOS command prompt, what would be the correct syntax to have the Win2k 'setup.exe' file load and install the OS?  I was thinking that it would be winnt.exe or winnt32.exe, but I was not sure if setup with an / option or not was the way to go???

#2:  Does anyone know of a way that I can simply edit the setupp.ini file, and then make a CD-R that will be a REAL install CD and launch the Win2k OS from the CD (just like the store bought ones), so that I don't have to do anything else other then edit my setupp.ini file(S), do the process to copy it as a REAL TRUE OS Installation CD, and then install my OS?

Thanks in advance for any of your time and reply!

It sounds like you have two things that potentially could be the problem.  In whatever CD burning software you are using, you must go into the bootable CD options and change the boot sectors from 1 to 4.  And the other thing is that you must import the boot image from the original CD otherwise the CD will not boot.  The easiest way to extract the image from the original CD is to go to this website ( http://www.nu2.nu/bbie/) and download the tool to extract the image.  If you are still having trouble, download this document (http://home.online.no/~msols/custom.zip) and print it out.  It is an example of an unattended install and has all of the info you will need to know.

you could use winiso to extract the cd's ISO, then use winiso to remove the file you have changed and add the modifyied file. and then write a new image file .... burn and test.

but you need a registed version of win iso to do that.

Interesting dilemma.

I have copied several bootable CD's I have created to the hard drive, and used Nero as my burning software once the files were altered, or enhanced by slipstreaming.

However, in Nero, all I did was click on the folder, choose \"Select All\", drag all files/folders to the new compilation, then burn.  (for data CD's I use 20-24x only)

Each and everyone came out as a fully working, bootable CD. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'B)\' />
