_NEC NR 7900A CDWriter issues
« on: June 13, 2003, 04:11:38 PM »
This damn little bugger (NEC NR7900A) refuses to see some new type of ATIP on NoName 52X CDs and writes them at 8X max.
Is there any way i can force it to write faster? - the CDs can take it and the writer is 20X or 24X (i'm not sure - i think it's 24X but i've never seen it do  that - same problem as above but with better (Traxdata, Verbatim) medium)

I have seen some firmware update for it on the web, but it says Dell OEM-only. Mine isn't in a Dell system, would the firmware work?

that's about it - thanks for the help!

The only suggestion I have is to check and see if DMA is enabled for that drive.
Open the device manager and for Win98 it would be in the properties for the CD burner.
Win2000/XP it would be in the properties of the IDE devices.
Another suggestion would be to make the NEC master on the second IDE port (if it isn’t already). Don’t use it on a controller card (if it’s setup that way).
Use your hard drive(s) on the first IDE port.
Some burners are kind of finicky that way.
Good luck!

nah that won't work... thanks http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> (actually that didn't work)

it's definitely from the speed recognition of the disks - probably something in the firmware

my question was - is there any way to actually impose a spped on the writer ( if the writer is capable ) - like a manual override of the automatic medium detection system

thanks
