Networking 1 XPh PC and 1 win2k PC

hi guys you all are an awesome forum and  i appreciate your help!

Basically I have 1 winxpH pc and 1 win2k machine plugged into a Netgear RP614 Router/firewall/4 port switch which has the broadband plugged into the WAN port.
I just want  to make a network between the 2 pc's.

Heres what ive done and the network still doesnt work.

1) put both pc's under the workgroup called "neptune"
2) given them both unique names
3) Enabled file and print sharing on them
4) Dynamic IP's assigned by the router
5) Made the printer "shareable" on the win2k pc
6) added the user name of the xp machine to the "administrators"  of the win2k system
7) Made a shareable folder on each PC
8) Both pc's are PINGable to eachother
9) the win2k pc doesnt show up in the xp's net neighborhood (it did at one time but then when i went to open it up it timed out saying i didnt have access rights)
10) enabled NETBEUI over TCP/IP on the xp machine.

I have read www.wown.com and another site (possibly homenethelp.com or soemthin like that) and nothing still works.

the pisser is that i came into work today and put 2 win2k pc's into a switch... put them in the same work group and gave them each a shared folder and it worked just peachy.   grrr

thank you for your help.

-Will

Try using each machine's IP address to access the other instead of the name assigned.  If that works, I'd recommend assigning static IPs then put the IP with the PC name in your hosts file.  Works for me anyways.

For the "right" solution I'd check out www.dalantech.com.  They specialize in networking how-to's and have some user forums if you don't find the answer to your question.

cool thanks.  I got it figured out... on the win2k machine i had to go into Control Panel | Admin Tools | Local Security Policy | user right assignments | "access this computer from the network" and grant access to "everyone".  (yes i have a firewall hehe)

thanks,
Will
