Win95 disk to floppies
« on: August 02, 2003, 04:54:02 PM »
Does anyone have any idea how to create a set of floppy installation disks from a CD? I had a set of them back in the 486 days. I wish I had hung on to them.

I Been Tryin but i can't find a util that will let me put my 2,000 kb CAB files to a 1.44 floppy

Look In you win 95 directory on your win95 cd and check out the size of your cab files

BY FAR the easiest way would be to download floppy images from P2P (assuming you own a lawful Win95 license, of course). Burn the images and any extracting tools (if you copy the Winimage program files it will run from CD) to a CD and you can not only generate a set of floppies, you can regenerate whatever floppies inevitably end up corrupt.  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />
Avoid the agony and put your hard drive in another PC, copy the Win95 installation files to the hard disk, put it back in the target computer, and install from there.
A DOS boot disk, a null-modem cable, and another PC will also let you transfer files.
Google for how to do it.

Actually since you have the Win95 CD, you can copy the setup and cab files to a floppy but since the cab files are 1.62MB in size then you will need software that will format the floppy to the 1.7MB DMF.
You can download the software here:   MAXI Disk
http://www.herne.com/

Here is the list of files on the Disk 1 of a floppy set:

Deltemp          1Kb     MS Dos app
Dossetup       71Kb     BIN file
Extract          46Kb     Application
Mini             432Kb
PreCopy 1    473Kb
Readme          8KB      Text
Save32           1Kb      MS Dos App
Scandisk      132Kb      Application
Scandisk          1Kb      Shortcut to Scandisk
Scanprog         5Kb      Application
Setup              6Kb      Application
Setup             34Kb      Text Doc
Smartdrv        45Kb      Application
Wb16off            1Kb      Application
Winsetup        156Kb     BIN file
Xmsmmgr        14KB     Application

Disk 2 has:

Precopy2       1019Kb
Win95_02        642Kb

Disk 3 has:
Win95_3        1676KB

The rest of the set has the same Cab file as the disk number
IE Disk 4 has Cab 4 ect

This information is from a regular Floppy disk set from Microsoft, I have never actually made a set from a CD, but I have heard this can be done, as long as you know what files to include and you have the CD-Rom

I used the maxi software as you recommended and copied the CAB files (very handy by the way). Based on your list of files on Disk 1 and 2, I created those disks as well.  I copied all the files in one directory on the system and then ran setup from the directory.  Worked well!

I did not require any further files.

I had to make the 28 cab file disks and then 2 separate disks for the smaller files you listed.  Total 30.  It was a pain in the behind but I had to get data off the laptop.  FYI the particular Win 95 CD was ver. B.
Thanks again
