Slow shutdown (~1min) in XP.
« on: August 06, 2003, 06:18:38 AM »
When shutting down WinXP - the final screen "windows is shutting down"
(or whatever) - stays there for up to a minute.
If I loose patience and switch the ***** thing off before it closes, all seems OK next time I switch on.
Any ideas please?

That’s normal when running anti-virus software and WinXP (you do have AV soft, right?).
Also, if you updated XP with all the latest patches, they cause XP to take a while to shut down (around one minute).
Win2000 takes even longer.
My suggestion is to turn the power off on the monitor, walk away, and let the system shut down on its own.
That’s what I do for my two XP systems and a Win2000 system.
Good luck! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

This seems normal for XP. Sometimes it shuts down fast and other times slow. It dependes what you were doing. It bothers me also. My XP is getting slower and slower to boot up so I'm going to format and reinstall fresh so it will be fast again. All windows get slower over time so after a year or two it's good to start fresh again.

Thanks Quik69 , The-Flames and Guest
Spot on in every respect - glad it's not my fault!
I'm new to XP - I was told it was the best!
Maybe one day Mr Gates WILL put out something that really works, when Hell freezes over !!

Hi all,
Just got to tell you - I've solved my problem re: "1 minute shutdown in XP".
Due to my hyper-paranoia I had set the dear thing to to "clear page-file on shutdown".
This is precisely what it was doing- bless it's little heart!
It now closes in 10secs flat!
My sincere appologies to Mr Gates and XP!
It's actually quite good when you get to know it.

Right,

R U running Mcaffe Virus scan online ? That's the culprit,
It took me a whole day to sort this out,

Solution: disable Mcaffe before shutdown and XP shuts down beautifully

Or get rid of Mcaffe, their software takes the piss

Hi,

I had a similar problem to the slow shutdown (~3mins of it looking like nothing had happened..) i just got on with it for months coz none of the fixes worked that id read (nvidia driver helpers...pagefile clearing etc..) and well ive found another potential culprit.
The latest version of Logitech's Itouch software (2.15?) is what caused my PC to be slow...(it might be a clash with something else...but if i go back to version 1.83 (original install CD) it works just fine.

Hope this helps someone somewhere

You got nVidia Hardware installed? If so check the following link:
http://www.activewin.com/winxp/tips/shutdown/1.shtml

I'll try it as soon as I get back home, seing as I am 'suffering' from a slow shutdown, too.

I use Win 2000 and it shuts down in approx 1 - 2 mins via the normal route. However, if I use the 'Power off' button on my keyboard, it shuts down within about 5 secs with no apparent effects. Don't ask me how - it just does!!!!!!

The system is triple boot with XP and 98 as well - 98 shuts down equally fast with both methods and XP manages 40 secs with the normal route and 10 secs with the keyboard button.

Cheers
Gerry

My machine, running xp pro, was taking 5 minutes to shut down. No big deal? Well actually yes. I only have one life and five minutes reading 'War and Peace' can be uplifting, whereas 5 minutes staring at a blue screen can really piss you off. Of course you can always go for a piss to pass the time, but this is not always enough, which leaves you with the sensation that Bill Gates is leaching your life away and frankly I don't think he gives a damn.

Anyway, I find that I am suddenly cured and the only thing that I have done recently is to install 'Partition Magic' and 'Boot Magic' from  'Powerquest' and install my old version of Windows ME to a partition on the XP disc. I know that this may not help, but I think that not passing on this information is probably a sin against the initial ethos of the internet as created by CERN.

I had slow shutdown, and I was using the ITouch 2.15 drivers with XP Pro. The symptom was that the "Windows is Shutting Down" took forever to appear. Unfortunately, I didn't have the older ITouch drivers as my keyboard came with the 2.15 version. Fortunately, Logitech is now aware of this issue, and the 2.2 drivers are available on their website. This problem is the main reason for the 2.2 drivers, and now everything is fine on my system. (For now...)

Hope this helps

I noticed the sane slow shut down problem too. I now turn off my "Zone Alarm" firewall just before shutting down my computer and now all is well! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
