I need help!
« on: August 24, 2003, 01:05:33 AM »
Alright, lately (these past 2 months) my computer has been having a lot of problems. Before i thought that it was the os, so i upgraded to win 2k... but that didn't help. Im still having the same problem (although its not as bad as before.). Here's the problem: my computer keeps "shutting down" although its still powered on (the cpu is still running, power light is on) but none of the drives function, nor do the keyboard, and the monitor shuts off. It doesnt happen all the time, but it could happen anytime, and it would really...be...bad if i was working on something. yeah. Whats the problem here? Any info could help! thanks.

well, anyways here's the specs on my computer, if it could help:

windows 2000 pro
633 mhz processor
256 mb ram
model: emachines

When it "shuts down" do you get any messages that "windows is shutting down" or is it that the screen just goes black and thats it. It sounds like the computer is in a "stand by" and you can't wake it up. I would go in the BIOS and check under Power Management to see if any such features are enabled, disable if so. Then I would check windows Power Options and see if anything is enabled there.  Check in Event Viewer to see if anything is happening at the time of the shut downs. Check for any viruses. Keep us posted on your progress.

If the above post doesn't work. Can you get another power supply from a friend to see if it is the power supply that is the cause of the problem? I have seen other E-Machines do this just before the power supply goes when I done bench repairs in the past. FYI- if it is the power supply, replace the whole computer case with power supply that you can get, a new case will cost about 40-80 bucks but a e-machine power supply starts at 80 bucks.... e-machine makes a case that only power supplies from them will fit in the case and they set a high price on parts.

Does it only shut down when you are online? If so goto http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...aster.worm.html and see if it is the MSBlast virus. It doesn't sound like what the virus done to me when I got it but, wtf... it's worth a try.
