win200 constantly restarts
« on: September 04, 2003, 02:04:08 AM »
I don't know a whole lot about computers but im helping keep the computer situation at my school under control (I use what I do know to help teachers).

We were upgrading some of the computers to win2000  (Yes UPGRADING 2MB 100MHZ computers, as if it were possible to get them running any better then they already are http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />)

Anyway, we encountered a strange problem where after formatting and installing win2000 the computers would begin to restart imeddiately after the login screen came up. We believe that it may have something to with the windows updates.

As far as an error goes it flashes by very quickly but I think it was "something_exception_not_handled" I can get the exact error tommorow.

Even though its a school a call to Microsoft is somewhere in the ball park of $250 so I figured I would try here. If this isn't the proper place for such a question then im sorry and by all means just close the thread.

Go visit Symantec's website for removal instructions and a free removal tool. Have fun. However, if Norton antivirus doesn't detect anything, go to http://www.pcpitstop.com/antivirus/default.asp or www.housecall.antivirus.com and do a online virus scan. It may also be the MSBlast virus http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

That system might have the virus on it, when I got the virus the first time, the patch wouldn't run and I had to go to a site and run a tool to remove

Sorry, I should have posted that we don't believe that its the MSBlast virus because the computers are on a network and it hasn't spread to any other part of the school. Furthermore they don't seem to have any of the symptoms of the blaster worm (thats what my adviser said, Im not sure exactly what the worm does.)

Its happening to approximately 8 computers that we've been working on, not just one. Mcafee (which we hate but are stuck with) didn't detect anything.

Ill look into the blaster worm but im not sure if thats it.

CEEZ is totally right. I can't even get XP on my old 550mhz w/256 mb ram and 4GB space. Use software of the same vintage.
