I'm pretty sure it has to do w/ audio programs that will only allow you to access the drive if you put in an audio cd, you have to find the program and remove it, if that doesnt work, goto a windows explorer window, click view, folder options, file types, and find the file type associated w/ it and delete it

I have just purchased a Micro Advandtage Quick Drive also! (I am having the same problem as everyone else) I am going to uninstall and see what happens. Who needs software with a thumb drive anyway?

Looks like that works....

I uninstalled the Microadvantage Drive tools, and rebooted. I have full control of both drives. I will keep testing and see if I can get it to break again. Let's hope not.

Had same problem. XP could see the CD drives and claimed they were OK, but I could not read the disks.
Uninstalled all burning software, removed the drivers and rebooted. XP reinstalled drivers and now the work fine.

Seems the problem maker is da dust, open cdrom unit blow awy da dust,
check for caddy bushes size ,try putting a peice of paper beneath the caddy bush be carefull with da lens and alignmet, lastly wipe the drive
mechanism with a cloth and put some white silicon grease on the drive
shaft. reassamble the cdrom try it it usally works 97 percent of da time
please be carefull with the flat wire and other power supply wires.

I too had this, if there was a disk in at power up, you could read the contents, but changing after XP pro was running gave the "please insert a disk into drive d:" message.
Uninstalled Quickidrive and all seems well again.
Time to ask for an update from microdrive.

hi, had the same prob with DVD-rom and DVD writer not working. I'd recently installed software that came with a USB flash drive. Uninstalled that software and both drives are now working.

I have cd problem as well.  Im on windows 98.  Once i put disk in, the cd does not respond and i cannot get the disk out.  The only way to get disk out is to turn machine on and quickly press eject button.
I wondered if it was something to do with me updating to aol 9 or maybe i installed something with my new MD player which you connect with to a USB, first time i done that, it built new drives but cd drive failed to respond days after i installed MD player software.

When i go to system and device manager i see universal serial bus controllers.  Im not sure if this is the USB flash thing people mention.  I recently bought a Mini Disk player and connected it to my computer in the usb slot and the computer built new drivers for it.  But it was about a week after that my dvd rom drive has failed.  The busy light lights up when i first turn computer on, but once i put disk in the tray, the drive fails to respond and i go and access my d drive and it says the device is not ready.

Hey.
got similar issues here. All me CDs were burnt with a recent Sony CDRW. I have now switched to a NEC DVDRW and Sony DVD drives.
All Cds read and play fine..... its just I get this annoying :"Cannot copy'wotever':invalid MS Dos function" error message.

I got told its gotta do with scratches (errr all CDs appear to be intact...) or the laser head alignment or wotavya.
Well, all in all, it sucks.

Hi
I have the same problem.  I am trying to fix a Toshiba laptop for a friend.  Everything works fine except if I put a cd in the drive it says "please insert a disk in drive D:".  The drive seems to work, the light comes on and the disk spins around and device manager reckons it works but it won't read the disk.
If I just click on D: I get the message straight away but if I put a disk in and then click it waits until the light goes out until I get the message.

I have tried uninstaling the drivers and restarting.  The D: drive turns up again but still doesn't work.

I can't find a dma button to uncheck in cd properties and I don't know how to take my drives off of DMA in bios. Windows help reckons this machine does not have bios but has EFI instead.  Whatever that means.  Toshiba setup on the other hand reckons it has bios version 1.20.

I am getting nowhere with this, does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

It looks like i have to buy new DVD Rom drive.  In Windows 98 SE the DMA check box is in the device manager/CD/DVD drive properties.  I tried having that both on then off and nothing happened after restarting both times.

I am having the same problem. One day (2 weeks ago) my CD drive as well as my DVD just stopped working. Both have the yellow exlimation point in the device manager, suggesting some registry problem, but I have used registry repair tools, as well as removed the device completely and nothing seems to help. This is a new computer as well. Has anyone found a solution?

I have been pulling my hair out tweaking, uninstalling Nero, Virtual Drive, Virtual CD, ASPI version levels, etc., etc., to no avail.  Just as soon as I saw Chris' note about the MircoAdvantage Quickdrive it all came together as to when and what caused my WinXP Home Ed. to stop working properly with any of my CD and DVD drives.  For one thing, the software eject from Windows Explorer was one of the first things I noticed did not work.  Over time everything mentioned in this thread/forum came to be true for my system.  Just as soon as I removed the QuickDrive tools from my system and rebooted all is working correctly now.  So, who cares if I do not have the tools to encrypt my "thumb drive" data.  When I think of all the time I have wasted trying to figure this out and get it corrected the amount I saved with MicroAdvantage does not seem worth it anymore.

Thanks, Chris, for the revelation!

i had the same problem with XP where it says insert disk into drive D:\
all i had to do (being i had 2 extra computers around the house) was take the CD-Rom drive from the old ones (parts computers) and replace. i shut down and restarted computer and windows auto-detected a new hardware(cd-rom drive) and whallaaa! back up and running.
NOTE: all cd-roms are basically the same so you can replace any CD-rom drive with any CD-Rom drive.

That is a know issue (i guess only in windows xp) and you just have to delete some entry registry entries (i had the same problem and it worked great for me)

Just do as it says in this link, then restart and... that's it!

I am having the same problem today I tryed to install a game and everything went along ok until at the end of the installation an error occured and I had to reboot. The error had nothing to do with the CD ROM just the game or the disk itself. Then after I rebooted I got no response at all from Drive D or the compact disk it wasnt reading or spinning like it usually does when I start up. When I go to my Computer and click drive D it says please insert a disk when there is already one in it. I have tryed numerous suggestions (removing drivers and rebooting so it will recognize them, unplugging the CD ROM and cleaning it and replugging it in) Still nothing. Its realling bugging to why this is happening..

I tryed everything that has been posted in this thread and nothing, I am running Windows ME (mellenium edition) and I have a mitsumi CD ROM.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SOMEONE PLEASE HELP  >>>> ME <<<<
