problem with netgear RP614 router and NTL BB
« on: November 11, 2003, 06:44:49 AM »
Hi,
I've been trying to set-up my netgear RP614 router and NTL BB with little success.
I feel that the router and pc are communicting properly as packets are being sent and received ok and i can update the router settings ok. It's just when I test the connection (where the netgear homepage should be loaded) after a while I eventually get the connection error screen in IE.
I've reset everything (holding reset button in, then unplugging, then switching on, waiting 30 secs, then releasing reset button), set-top box, and pc, but this hasnt helped. I've done everything in the manual but when I get to the basic settings screen I think this is where the problems lie. I say that I have a dynamic addressing, don't have to log-in to internet. then it asks for username and domain name, if required. for eg - my email address is [email protected], so is XXXX my username? what do I enter for my domain name? ive tried both the smtp and pop server addresses.
I thought I'd leave everything else to be detected automatically.
I have tried entering these DNS server addresses I found in the forum - 1st - 194.168.4.100, 2nd - 194.168.8.100, but this didnt help. I've also tried looking for the physical address of my ethernet card and entering it in the MAC address - this didnt help either.
I thing that's annoying is connect correct. it keeps making it's noises as it does and saying that their is no NIC/ethernet connection present. through control panel I can view the ethernet connection and it says it's working fine and packets are going either way. when i run the tests on connect correct it says that the Gateway is ok but all other services - NTL homapage etc, have failed. Then i test the connection it says it is fine.
I'm using XP on a Sony 486 Vaio laptop.
man i'm baffled!!!
any help would be greatly appreciated and cyber beers will be bought all round
cheers,
dave

i now have internet on 2 computers but neither of them seem to be able to send data.  ie - i can't log into any sites that require username/password, or perform searches with in sites eg this forum. it just hangs and eventually brings up the 'this page cannot be displayed' error msg.
any ideas??

during setting up the NTL BB with the router i had various problems.  the broadband installer brought up a few errors.
originally i was getting connection test 3 failed.
"failed to open connection with pop.ntlworld.com - error code 11".

if i rebooted the pc without shutting down the installer it would bypass this but then i got the error- "email test - a tcp/ip socket error occured while communicating with your server at smtp.ntlworld.com - error code 77".

rebooting bypassed this error to - i then got the error msg-"error code 3 - unable to register with Broadjump server. Error while reading HTTP response line. The prescribed timeout expired while awaiting data'.

after all of this the internet does work at required speeds - i just cannot log onto anything.

also - when i was previously on NTL BB at a different house i used the local proxy server - imtkomi.leeds....not sure about exact address. should i still use this?

thanks in advance

i'm still having the problem with accessing any sites that require a log-in. ive tried using the local proxy server cache1-ldst.server.ntli.net but this hasnt helped. ive also tried connecting without my router and have the same probs. I havnt done anything with the firewall on the router - i assume it's 'on' in some way but I havnt messed with it's settings yet.
ive also checked the privacy settings and made sure that i have 'pre session cookies' enabled.

when trying to log into the o2 site i got this error page(as a change from the usual 'page cannot be displayed':
-----------------------------
PROXY ERROR
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server. The proxy server could not handle the request POST/login/mblogin.
REASON: could not connect to remote machine
-----------------------------

does this shed any light on it?

also, on the pc with connect correct on - it is saying that all everything is fine when i run all the tests.

i'm running IE6 with 128-bit cipher strength.
i havnt added the 3 lots of firmware for my router yet - will do tonight as long as i can download ok!

thanks for reading
dave
