Hardware / PC Mods and you hacked computer
« on: November 08, 2004, 02:59:24 AM »
THAT COMP IS COOL!

What kind of computer is (or was) that?

What OS is on it?

what are those drives in there?

how much ram/harddrive memory do you have?  how many harddrives? (i would like two drives instead of one with the same space on a computer if i had a desktop one, i dont know why...)

what you said about alienware being jelous is probably true; maybe you can sell them designs http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> .
It was built by scratch by myself so it was never a name brand. I had Windows 98SE, XP Pro, 2000 Pro and Redhat all installed for an OS. It had 5 drive bays, #1- CD-Rom, #2- DVD-R, #3- car radio with EQ, #4- speen knob controls for the fog machine (inside), fans and neon lights, #5- LCD Temp readers for CPU and other stuff. I was a Intel 800MHz over clocked to over 1GHz and it was water cooled. The case was white before I started and it didn't have any holes or windows in it.

After you burn the CD, do you "close" the CD? Some drives will not read a CD-R unless the software program you use to copy the CD is closed.

Okay here is the problem (homework) that I have no idea about....

1) Create four files with a .TXT extention by typing at the prompt TOUCH filename. After studing the man pages, find a way to use XARGS together with other commands to change the extention of all these files to .DOC in one line.

Hardware / how reliable is AMD processor
« on: November 24, 2003, 12:32:05 AM »
Another thing to consider is that the new AMD Athlon 64 FX kills the P4c EE totally.
Amd is now king of the hill again. The 64 has a cover over the core like the P4 so crushing the core is nolonger an issue but for those of us how are smart enough to use a shim it never was.
I still love Inte;'s http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Hardware / how reliable is AMD processor
« on: November 07, 2003, 10:47:32 PM »
AMD are good but, the cpu die is not as durable as the Intel. If you remove or install the heatsink on a slight angle... you can very easy crack the die. Also, the AMD is not designed to run is the heatsink fan ever failed. If a heatsink failed, the CPU would heat up until the die cracks and smokes the CPU until it will no longer work. However, the Intel P$ was designed for this and if the fan ever failed, the CPU would get warm but, slow down the over all speed of the system to stop it from over heating.

Overclocking / overlocking amd k6-2 400 ?
I have amd k6-2 400mhz and mainboard acorp ali aladin 1543 and I set the multiplaier to 5 and it runs as a 500mhz processor. My question is is it dangerous and what temperature do these processors reach?
Another way is to go up on the MHz bus speed. It runs at 100, try like 105 or better

Overclocking / overlocking amd k6-2 400 ?

You always take a chance when you overclock. However, most of the time the computer will just lock up or reboot before damage is done to the CPU.

Okay, I wanted to spy on someone and keep a log what they do on the computer. So I installed a spy software program. Everything was going good and it was working without her knowing. However, thanks to a 19 month old kid I got busted because she was hitting keys and somehow it the 4 keystroke hot keys  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

I use to work at a computer place that sold 1,000's of that type of monitor. We use to have a huge amount of them come back with that same problem, If you look at the phillips website, you will find the contact info for them and they will X-ship you a monitor.

You need to ask? Intel has had the market for years.... they own the market because they are the best

Tech Clinic / Dual Boot Modem Problem
« on: October 11, 2003, 11:49:14 PM »
You have to go into the device manager and switch the modem com port to something like 3 or higher. Com one is used by a serial port and it is the cause of the conflict.

Your system has RDRAM or also known as Rambus. The sticks have to be installed in pairs (equal size). Go to your local Best Buy, CompUSA or another computer super center and ask for Rambus PC800 ram. You can also buy it on Ebay .

DCOM RPC Worm in the Wild!

If you're running a Windows system please go to windows update and make sure you have downloaded and installed every critical patch listed. Don't be lazy, just do it right now! There is officially a worm out there that is taking control of windows based system right now.

Here's the short and skinny on the worm.

1) It's being called "W32.Blaster.Worm" by Symantec, "W32/Lovsan.worm" by Mcafee, and "WORM_MSBLAST.A" by Trend.
2) It exploits the DCOM RPC vulnerability (described in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-026) using TCP port 135.
3) If infected a program called msblast.exe will be running.
4) It causes system instability and opens your computer to remote access.
5) It cannot automatically spread to windows NT or 2003 systems but they will crash if the worm tries to access them. If the worm is installed manually it will run in windows NT and 2003 though.
6) The worm also attempts to perform a DoS attack on the Windows Update site.
