Very possible and very easy.
K6-2s are not locked, so the multiplier can be easily adjusted.

Quick intro to OC.
you can adjust the FSB (front side bus). this is the speed at which the cpu communicates with ram and other components. Most likely your fsb is 100MHz.

then we have the multiplier. the product of the multiplier and the fsb give the speed of the processor. In your case, the multiplier is 4. (4*100=400)

Fsb and multiplier settings can be adjusted in the bios or through jumpers on the motherboard. depends on your mobo, so check out your mobo manual and adjust the fsb/multiplier to suit.

If possible, i recommend using the highest stable fsb, and then adjusting the multiplier for the fastest CPU overclock.

eg (112*4=448MHz) will be faster than (100*4.5=450MHz) due to the RAM being overclocked as well.

m running k62 500 @5*100 couldn\'t seem to use aything higher than 100 it won\'t boot up..

mobo is epox mvpg2 w/ 1 mb cache...
the manual says it runs sdrams @ 100 mhz max and not 133

could this b the reason y i can\'t go over 100?

I have read in the past that the K6-2s are not very good over-clockers.  I just recently picked up an older system with a K6-2 400 on a Shuttle MB, but have yet to get it up and running.  I look forward to trying to get more out of the chip!

Without a serious cooling setup, you arent going to get much out of a k6-2. A 50MHz overclock is about the limit.
The K6-2 mobos use a synchronous FSB/Mem speed to my knowledge...that is a 100MHz bus speed means your memory runs at 100MHz. If you go faster than 100Mhz, make sure your memory is up to the task.

I have a K6-2 400MHz as well and thinking of putting it in my ASUS TX97-E mobo. The mobo has a max limit of 82 Bus speed and 233MHz cpu. One of my dilemna is whether I underclock the RAM with 66MHz or go with 100MHz.
Anyone done a TX97-E with K6-2 before?

You always take a chance when you overclock. However, most of the time the computer will just lock up or reboot before damage is done to the CPU.

 Another way is to go up on the MHz bus speed. It runs at 100, try like 105 or better

I have a aopen ax5t rev. 3.5 motherboard, and 3 chip possibilities, and was wondering which would be best. The board has a 83mhz fsb, with multipliers from 1.5 - 5.5x. The chips I have are a k6 266mhz, k6-2 350mhz and a 400mhz. The board is only listed for k6-233. Would it be possibly to run the processor at 83mhz and 4.5x to run the 400mhz, or should i stick to the lower speed?

The k62400 has a 100mhz bus. You could try putting that cpu in to see if it will work @ 4.5X83 but that would = 374mhz.

I have an old AMD K6-2 400mhz on "AGP" with Ali chipset and Award Bios.
I've tried overclocking many ways and I cant get it to list anything higher than 400mhz when I bot it up. If anyone can help I would much appreciate it.

use a AMD k6-2 0r AMD k6-3  with a multiplier of 2 . These processors interpret multilpier of 2 as multiplier of 6 . So even though the motherboard does not support multiplier of 6 you can , can use the full speed of AMD 500 or AMD 550 on an old motherboard.

Plus for enabling all features of the cpu and big hdd support , update bios using bios patcher from www.rom.by   .

It is the most useful software for all AMD k6-2, AMD k6-3 users which makes any old award bios motherboard recognize AMD and cyrix cpus correctly.

The cyrix MII  also comes at speeds of 550 and above but floating point unit is very poor

 Hi there,

if you are adjusting the FSB speed and the multiplier correctly but on bootup you're not seeing the clock speed you expect, then it could be that you have an old bios that is not recognising the higher clockspeed of the cpu.  I had the same problem initially when I upgraded to my AMD k6-2 500 - on bootup the BIOS reported only 400 Mhz processor.

What you may need to do is flash your BIOS to the latest version for that motherboard, and the BIOS may then report the new cpu speed correctly. Try the motherboard manufacturers website - they may have links to updated versions of the BIOS - I know Gigabye website does this.
