Tech Clinic / Dell Latitude D820 XP clean install issues
« on: November 24, 2012, 09:33:49 PM »
I was forced to do a clean install on my sister's laptop, and I'm having issues finding all of the correct drivers and whatnot. I could not locate her install discs, so I resorted to using an older version of Windows XP. I installed this version (Windows XP Service Pack 1a) and had no idea how basic it was. I have been downloading files on my computer and transferring them onto hers via flashdrive. I cannot figure out how to connect to the internet after completing the clean install. I have run out of ideas on how to correct my issues, I have gone thru and updated to service pack 2 and then SP3 without much benefit. I've also installed Intel PROSet wireless manager, but I cannot seem to locate/nor install the correct driver to get wireless. I do not know what to do from here, please help me!!

-- her laptop has an ethernet cable input as well, but i also cannot figure out how to make a connection thru that either...

You will have to get have your neighbor try those steps then, it's hard to troubleshoot without direct access to the router

Alright, I suppose that I'll just wait for another week until I get home. I'll let you know if I have troubles at home. Thanks questolo

I can't follow those steps because I'm at my beach house, in which we do not have internet access. I only have the password for my neighbors wireless, and the wireless strength is very good on every other laptop in the house. My computer is telling me that it sees these networks but it comes up with nothing when I try to connect to one of them.

I am unable to connect to wireless networks on my laptop. I moved away from my normal default wireless networks, and was not on the internet for quite some time. Now every time I attempt to go on and connect to a wireless network, I highlight wireless icon on the toolbar and it states that wireless networks are available. Once I click it says there are no networks to be found. I've determined that my wireless card is working because I went through some diagnostic menus and whatnot and it was able to find the networks that I have been looking for. I am very confused, and have never had a problem connecting to the internet before. I have a switch on the left front corner of my laptop and it is in the on position but the light is not lit and this once used to blink. The wifi light on the right side of my keyboard however is lit. Please help me fix this annoyance. Thanks. Power-I

Hey questolo, I was wondering if there were any other options to fix this. I've made no progress over the last month, but I believe I need this fixed but don't know how to go about it. If could help me out further on this matter, I'd greatly appreciate it. thanks, power-i

I left my vista disk at school so I won't be able to get to it for another week or so. But, I do have a dell, and when I installed everything I'm not 100% positive but I think that Service Pack 2 did not come preinstalled. I have the link to my last topic, there are some hijack logs and whatnot in there from when I first clean installed, "Windows Failed to Start" .

I dont have the full mcafee antivirus, i have some virusscan thing that i had to download to get on my network at school. The microsoft security essentials was installed when I reinstalled vista, and the mcafee like a month later. Is using just the mcafee one going to suffice?
