I always recommend partitioning any hard drive.
30GB is a good deal of space, so partitioning is highly recommended on this drive.
Use your favourite partition manager > fdisk, partition magic, or even win2k setup to create a partition structure along the following lines.
2GB for the OS
2GB for installing Programs
4GB or more for installing games.
Setup the remaining space as you like.
To reduce fragmentation move My Documents, the Outlook express store folder, the TEMP folder and the temporary Internet Files folder to the games or another partition. Visit my site for details.

It\'s really personal preference.  I just use one huge partition myself.  That way I don\'t have to worry about running out of space on my 2nd partition, while my 3rd has tons of space.  True I could just resize the partitions, but still...

I have 2 20gb harddisks and 1 of 10gb, I prefer not to partition because I do not see the advantage of partitioning .If your harddisk crashes , with partitions ,you loose every installation , same as without partitions .If your operating system is down even with your installed programs on another partition ,you have to reinstall everything if you didn\'t make a backup image of the partition with the operating system .But then this is my opinion and everybody is entitled to his opininion

The advantage of partitions is that one partition can be damaged and you will still have the rest.
With small hard drives like 2GB, partitions dont make much sense.
With partitions as I outlined, it is also much easier to do a backup of data held on the drives.
As indicated before, fragmentation is reduced as well with partitions.

You are correct, everyone is entitled to their view.

Ok , about smaller backups images or other you are right .
I started with a 40mb hardisk in  1990 and I thought I got the world , and then later , 500mb and I partitioned in 5 partitions .
I\'m talking about atari computers now .I still have that 500mb harddisk and it still functions on a falcon I don\'t have used for years .
I never got a crashed hd , and allways stayed with scsi hd .
I still think they are the best ,perhaps an \"idee fixe\" of me.
But then , you are right , if you want to be really carefull , and you have no place to put your backup images , you should make a partition of 4 gb to put your OS on , so you can put the image , and eventually the installed programs on another part of the harddisk .I do not have that problem as I have 3 hardisks , but I also installed w2k the first time on a 2gb hd and the installed programs and all the rest on another 4gb hd
