how do you guys test the .sif out that it\'s actually working? do I have to boot from cd and go step by step all the way to the serial entry box? or just double click on setup.exe in another windows OS and get to the serial entry box to see if the serial is auto inserted? thanks for replying.

Try VirtualPC.
Flames showed it to me earlier and I have loved it ever since.

Note: If you run setup.exe in another OS you are actually upgrading the OS. You have to use WINNT32.SIF instead as you are actually running winnt32.exe to upgrade.

Question? Has anyone tried editing the SETUPP.INI file to insert the serial number. I have had two people now mention that it did not work for them and my xp disk at home just died. No comments about making backups please.

The only way I knew it worked was to try it.
I tried the upgraded to Win98
and Scratch install of the boot CD.
it does not even ask for the serial number

I appreciate it, Twinkie for your helpful comment. And big thanks to Gary for answering my questions all time. I guess I now have to start it over again since the bootable CD I made did not work. My computer can recognize the CD and got past the first few steps in the early stage of setup and then it said it could not locate files in CD. Dont really know what that means. anyone with similar problem or can help? thanks

Tried what you said. it didn\'t work. I created a WINNT32.SIF in 386 folder and started the set up upgrade. The serial wasn\'t there.

First: Not recognizing the CD? When? During the install, after the install, were you adding any programs at the end? Need more info.

First: my computer can recognize the bootable CD and allows me to hit the space bar to start the setup. Then I can see windows loads all the neccessary drivers for the setup process. But one or two steps after this, windows seems to complain that it can\'t locate files on the CD. if I would just copy every thing on this CD back to the hard drive, I think the install would be just fine.

it definitely worked. I\'ve tried on both WinXP and Win2k. I chose full unattended option. The XP version of setupmanager.exe from XP DEPLOY.CAB works best and works for both WinXP and Win2k.

OK guys, I think there is a little confution about this one, this is whay I have in the CD I created:

First: create a text file with the info shown below, just copy and paste as it is.(trust me, it works!)

Second: Rename it to : \"WINNT.SIF\"

Third:
The key shown here is the Corporate, if you use a different key make sure you change it. You need to add this file to your i386 folder, and burn a new CD. If it\'s an \'.iso\' image use WinISO to add the file; if you copied all the CD to your Hard Drive, then you need to make your CD boootable.

I\'ve done it this way with no problems at all, good luck!

You can copy your winnt.sif file to a 3,5\" floppy disk before an installation of W2K and put the disk into your PC.
Than you boot from the original installation W2K CD. During the installation the setup software looks out to the floppy disk and if it found a file named winnt.sif, than it use it.
You can set a lot of things in winnt.sif file to automate installation of W2K. And you can use the original CD!

Automatically inserting the serial number for each install.
In the \'i386\' folder of each version open the file SETUPP.INI (use notepad for this one)
Find the line:
[Pid]
ExtraData=646E77637A6F6D79626A1D94089595
Pid=51873000

and change it to
[Pid]
ExtraData=646E77637A6F6D79626A1D94089595
Pid=51873270

You are basically changing 000 to 270 at the end of Pid=
Make sure you did this for all three folders.
