High CPU usage(100%)+explorer
« on: November 13, 2005, 08:00:38 PM »
Hi guys...

Hoping you can help out...My Comp has been slowly dying over the last week or so...I have run countless Spyware and Anti virus programs and everything comes up empty...I am hoping you can take a look at this log and find my 'needle in a haystack' ...for this novice anyway !!!
Thanks for taking the time to look....
Rick

How many Active Virus software do you have running in the background?
Having more than one running in the background can cause a conflict and slow system performance

I would keep the one your happiest with and uninstall the others
P.S. Ewido is not a virus scanner, it can stay

How many active Firewalls do you have running in the background, including the one built into Service pack 2
Only one again is required

Open Task manager, what using all the CPU to bring it to 100%?

I only have the 1 firewall running, as well as 1 anti-virus (AVG)...And even when I turn off ALL the extras, it changes very little...

Under task manager, the biggest user is EXPLORER.EXE...It can jump around from 25% to 50%...
And IEXPLORE.EXE is using @ 25%... Even just moving the mouse increases the usage #'s...

So your saying you have Symantec's product installed but you don't use the Anti-Virus
Right?
When was the last time you cleaned your Temp Internet files folders and run a defrag on this machine?
How much Ram installed?

When was the last time you defragged?

Before the high CPU usage, what programs or files have you opened
EG.. an AVI file

When you boot into safe mode, do the problems go away?

What was the last thing you remember installing before this happened?

Right?

Yes, the symantecs are still installed...They came as a freebie with the dell and have since run out... I much prefer the AVG, not only because they are free but much less annoying...

When was the last time you cleaned your Temp Internet files folders and run a defrag on this machine?
How much Ram installed?
When was the last time you defragged?

I clean the temp Internet files once a week and defrag once a month...

There is 512 Mb ram
Before the high CPU usage, what programs or files have you opened
EG.. an AVI file

My son also uses the comp and he has AVI's etc etc... So exactly what he might have been using is unknown

When you boot into safe mode, do the problems go away?

Safe mode works well...Mind you, without IE on, there is no incidence of high CPU usage (for IE) as when not in safe mode

What was the last thing you remember installing before this happened?

The last hardware I installed was a RADEON video card...but it worked well for about a week after that installation...I have since removed and deleted the video card in my attempts at trouble shooting...As far as software, I installed "Black and White 2", hence the need to update the video card...

1. Can you try uninstalling  Symantec's as it is  outdated
Reboot afterwards

2. When you installed the Video card, did you disable your onboard video when using? If this applies?

As a check

Go to START>>RUN>>type in msconfig
Hit OK

Under the Boot.ini tab put a tick in
BaseVideo
Click Apply and Close

Allow to restart the computer
Back in Windows, everything will be bigger and less defined
Don't let that shock you
Now try running IE and Explorer
How does everything run

To reverse the change go back to mscong and uncheck basevideo
Put a check in Normal startup under the General tab
apply and close

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log
Let me know how things went

Reboot afterwards

Symantec uninstalled now...

2. When you installed the Video card, did you disable your onboard video when using? If this applies?

I did disable the onboard, and after removing the new Video card, re-enabled the onboard

3. Under the Boot.ini tab put a tick in
BaseVideo

OK, I did this and as you stated, the appearance changed..No worries..
And everything seemed to work fine...I had Task Mgr running as I was doing things and it would spike anytime I asked the comp to do something, but  the % quickly fell back down..This was especially noticeable when starting IE...

And then, as you said, I went back to config and when I went to uncheck the base box, it was already empty...
I selected normal start and rebooted, back to normal view, and it is dragging it's butt again...Spiked at 100% most of the time with the biggest culprit being EXPLORER.EXE.. One other thing I did notice, is that when I ask the comp to do something, most times the icons on the desktop disappear and have to rebuild themselves, ever so slowly...

I have removed (??) all the symantec items via the add/remove options, but I still see some there in the log...Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

I'm going to chance that you had Norton AV 2004 or Norton System Works 2004
If this is correct
Follow the removal procedure to completely remove Norton's

Restart after complete
You may have to use the SymNRT utility supplied by Norton's
Post a new log and let me know if things clear up

Can you do the following please

Let's do a bit of cleanup and then we'll see if it's a driver issue

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\My Download Files\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\My Download Files\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: Run IMVU - {d9288080-1baa-4bc4-9cf8-a92d743db949} - C:\Documents and Settings\Ryan\Start Menu\Programs\IMVU\Run IMVU.lnk (file missing)
O23 - Service: CA License Client (CA_LIC_CLNT) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\CA_LIC\\lic98rmt.exe (file missing)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer

Back in windows

Where did you get your video drivers at?
From the manufacturer or Windows updates?

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

« Reply #11 on: November 19, 2005, 07:23:30 AM »
OK, as suggested I ran Hijack this and clicked the files you noted..It does seem a little better, but still spikes to 100% when I ask it to do something...IE open an IE window...Even when I closed the Hijack this program, it jumped to 100% while it closed...There is something else I noted, which may not even have any bearing...
When I reboot the comp, and it gets to the point where the desktop is opening up, there is a momentary window that seems to try to open up...It only lasts for a flash, and I only see the outline of a box flash by...No writing or anything to indicate what it is...Any way to find out what this is?

As I sit here typing this, task manager is at 87 % with EXPLORER at 39% and system idle at 50%...No other programs open, besides the ones listed in task mgr...

I really appreciate this help...Thanks so much

Sorry, forgot to answer your driver ?...

All the drivers came with the machine when bought new...I may have forgotten about any updates that were done automaticaly by the manufacturer on line, but as far as I know I haven't touched the drivers...

there is a momentary window that seems to try to open up...It only lasts for a flash

That could be something like AVG loading up on startup

I want to make sure the following is not causing problems
It shows file missing and may be corrupt
Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- CA License Client

Double click on it--- STOP the service--If running
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled

Could you do the following please

From my signature below, run an Online Virus scan at Panda's
Choose to scan "Local disks"
When the scan is done, if anything is found it will give you the option to save a report
Select to save the report to desktop and then copy and paste the contents back here

Can you also enter your Device Manager
Do you have any yellow exclamation marks in there?

I have disabled CA as requested and ran the scan at PANDA with the results being '0' across the board..

That scan took hours to run, was this normal?

And no ! in Device Mgr...

Another ?? for you, and this is prob out there in left field...Could my IE settings be causing any of this? I remember somewhere along the way 'tweaking' my settings for IE after visiting PC Pitstop??

Can't remember what I did or changed, but ???

Check and see if any files are missing or corrupt
Go to START>>RUN>>type in
sfc /scannow
Hit OK

Let this finish

If everything is good there
You should try checking for Video adapter driver updates from your manufacturer
to see if this will help

to help identify your display adapter
Use a product such as Everest Home Edition

Plus this tool identifies just about everything in your comp.
Follow proper installation instructions for your display adapter from the manufacturer

sfc/ scannow produced no results or messages...

Video adaptors are current...

I must admit the comp is better, but still pegs at times...Esp when I open up an IE window...
But ask the comp to accomplish more than 2 things...Major hassle...

Just for troubleshooting purposes
Can you try the following please

Click Start>> Run,
type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.

3. On the Services tab,
select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box,
 and then click Disable All

Apply it and Close

reboot the computer

Is Ie still spiking?

Scroll to the bottom of that page for the download link

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RootkitRevealer.html

Unzip Rootkitreavler.zip  to desktop and double click on RootKitReavler.exe
Once open click on SCAN
Sit back and wait for the scan to finish
Once finished, Save a log of what was found
By clicking File>>Save
Try and save it too desktop if possible

You should also turn off any program that might activate during the scan, such as a screensaver, an antivirus tool, or any other running program. Switching focus to another program, or allowing other programs to activate during the scan, won't cause your system to crash, but doing so may cause the RootkitRevealer program to display inaccurate or misleading results.
