Modifying Windows XP\'s Boot Logo
« Reply #40 on: June 05, 2002, 05:09:22 AM »
I had a copy of the FBI boot screen for windows XP a few months ago, and my computer went FUBAR and i had to reinstal windows, and, in doing so, lost the boot screen.  I tried to get it back by going to the place where i had originally dloaded it - themexp.org, but it was gone.  I send a few messages in to forums, but didn\'t get anywhere.  Now, its back up in their site, but when i click the link it says that they lost most of their site data, and they are waiting for people to re-submit stuff.

Does anyone have this boot screen who would be willing to e-mail it to me as an attachment?? My e-mail address is \'niceguy_rfdEmail Removed\'
Thanks in Advance

I had the same prob.

The solution?

Save the bmp with a 96dpi res at 640x480 and when you save it make sure it has 16colours (4bit) and is not compressed (RLE).

Let meknow how you get on.

Dual Proc Comps use the same ntoskrnl.  I have a dual proc comp and it works fine.  I got the access violation message to but it is because of photoshop saving it wrong.  Use 96dpi, 16 color, 4 bit, 640x480.  It works fine.
Can someone please help me?

I have changed the logos and everything to the way I want them, but when I try saving the new logos in Photoshop 6 it doesn't give me the choice (at all) to save them as 16 bits.

It only lets me save them in 8 and 4. What am I doing wrong?

TIA
they are settings for 4 bits per pixel (4 bpp) and 8 bpp respectively.  4 bpp is 16 bit colour as 4^2 = 16

solution => choose 4 (bpp, i.e. not 4 bits, but 4 bpp)

 Photoshop CAN'T save 4 bits Bit Map Pictures, until you change to 15 colors NOT 16 colors.

But, if you want to change to 16 bit, then you will need to change your palete to  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':blink:\' /> RGB mode, it doesn't work if you don't do this. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':blink:\' />

If've got some pictures of my friends and I want these pictures to be my winXP Prof Logons. Where can I find a Thread how to make my own Logons??
I would be very pleased if you could tell my how to make logons for Logon Loader.
Thank you in advance. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':rolleyes:\' />

I tried the tut and it worked fine with Photoshop but when I start up Windows the image occurs to be shifted to the right a little bit, anybody knows the reason. I tried to edit the .bmp using image processing software, unfortunately all the 4bit information was converted to 8bit so this does not help.

Another hint to avoid overwriting the original ntoskrnl.exe create a textfile named boot.txt or locate it in the root of your system directory. Then write in

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP My Boot Screen" /fastdetect /KERNEL=otherkrl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

This opens a dialogue which lets you choose the kernel at startup with a timeout of 10 seconds. Once your bootscreen works right just set the timeout to zero.

Wow, lots of people asking questions, I messed around with the kernal and got it working in about 10 min.  So the solution is, if you have to ask questions about something like this, you probably shouldnt be messing with it.  Now then, next topic photoshop.

PHOTOSHOP CAN BE USED TO EDIT THE IMAGES FOR THE BOOT SCREEN.  dont listen to the other dorks saying you cant.  Using resourse hacker save the images (image 10 is incorrect by the way, change image 1 for the primary boot screen).  Open the file that you saved in photoshop and download the correct palette.  Apply the palette and tada, you should see the image.  Here is the important part that will awanser most of the questions:

1. You cannot change the dimensions of the original file.
2. When saving make sure your in "Indexed Color" mode, using the palette provided in the tutorial on themexp.org
3. THIS IS REAL IMPORTANT after saving an option box will pop up make sure to select "Windows" as the file format, the depth has to be at "4 bit" and the box next to "compress (RLE)" should NOT be  checked.

If you follow the directions on themexp.org carfully it should be no problem to change the boot screen, but you have to ask yourself, is doing this really worth your time? If you awansered yes, your a big nerd, just like me.
