REDOWNLOAD Hijackthis 1.99.1 from my signature below and save it too a permanent folder of it's own on your harddrive
ONLY run hijackthis from this new location

You are running Symantec's AV and AVG
It's never a good idea to run more than one active AV in the background at the same time
You can either disable one completely or uninstall it
Having more than one can cause conflicts and decrease system performance

Reboot your computer
Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log

Why is this computer so far behind on Windows updates?
Is this a legit version of XP installed on it?

« Reply #2 on: April 23, 2006, 01:13:10 PM »
hi,

the laptop i'm working on doesn't allow me to connect to the internet.  i had to save the hijackthis.exe on disk and transfer to laptop.  cable company couldn't help, no IP address or something.  i think it's all virus/worm/spyware related.

« Reply #3 on: April 23, 2006, 02:02:58 PM »
It has been 2 weeks since you posted your first log, you MUST post back in a more timely fashion if you expect to get this computer clean

It still looks like Norton's av and AVG are running together
for now, go into your add/remove programs and remove AVG
Reboot the computer afterwards

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...://my.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...rch/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...://my.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,First Home Page = C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\welcome.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KAZAA] C:\Program Files\Kazaa\kazaa.exe /SYSTRAY
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

O9 - Extra button: World Poker Exchange - {76028735-BBF1-4044-8DE2-5B90F0C7A77C} - C:\Program Files\WorldPokerExchange\GameClient.exe (file missing)

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

O15 - ProtocolDefaults: '@ivt' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Intranet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'file' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'ftp' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'https' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer

Don't open a browser yet, instead access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content---Also Reset home page

Go to START>>RUN>>type in cmd
Hit OK
Type the following exactly
ipconfig /flushdns
Hit Enter
Exit out

See if you can get back online with this computer

If you can, make sure that you are running the latest version of Spybot
Which is Spybot 1.4
You can verify that by looking in your add/remove programs
If you have the latest version, chances are your not running it with the latest definition updates
We can manually download them, but we will get other tools also to help you out if we have too

If you can, or even if you can't
Let me know and IMMEDIATELY come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log!

But it looks as if you definitely have Spybot installed
Can you open Spybot>>click on HELP about
Tell me spybot version and latest detection updates date

From the bottom of this reply box can you do the following please
Download and unzip to the computer with no Internet's desktop
IEFix.zip, so you now have IEFix.reg extracted to the desktop

RIGHT CLICK HERE
and choose "Save target as.." in IE to save Deldomains.inf on the desktop
Save this and transfer to the other computer
In firefox it's "Save link as.."

Go here and download and save it then transfer to the other computer
WinsockXP Fix

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [SpybotSnD] "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe" /autocheck
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*Restore] C:\WINDOWS\system32\restore\rstrui.exe -i
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: '@ivt' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Intranet Zone

Back in Windows
Double click on IEFix.reg and allow to add/merge to the registry

Reboot the computer once again

Back in Windows
==Right Click on DelDomains.inf>>Choose Install from the menu bar

If you still have no internet connection afterwards
Run WinsockXP fix and choose the FIX
Follow the prompts and reboot the computer afterwards

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log

Keep me informed on Everything!

Double click on IEFix.reg and allow to add/merge to the registry

wasn't able to do this so i didn't want to go on to any other steps:

after i double click:

Are you sure you want to add the information in C:\DOCUME~1\TEMP\Desktop\IEFIX.reg to the registry?

I click yes

Then another message come up:

Cannot import C:\DOCUME~1\TEMP\Desktop\IEFIX.reg: Error accessing registry

Info on SpyBot:

SpyBot-S&D

doesn't indicate which version

You let IEFix.zip unzip to your temp folder
Take a look at what I said

Do this instead
On the computer with internet
UNZIP IEFix.reg
Then transfer it too the other computer

Go on with the next step if your stuck, but I would like you too properly merge IEFix

Are there other users on the computer?
Can you also open Hijackthis, open Misc tools section>>Open Uninstall Manager
Click the SAVE LIST button, save the list too your DESKTOP
Then copy and paste that info back here too

Is your girlfriends user account set up as Administrator?

Do the following

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box to notepad, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg

Save this file on the desktop
Ensure to copy from REGEDIT4 and down in the code box
Code: [Select]
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults]
@=""
"http"=dword:00000003
"https"=dword:00000003
"ftp"=dword:00000003
"file"=dword:00000003
"@ivt"=dword:00000001
"shell"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults]

"ftp"=dword:00000003
"file"=dword:00000003
"@ivt"=dword:00000001

fix.reg didn't work.  what should be the full file name?

my gf's account is the only one that is active.  she did have a guest account active last year.

seems like web pages are being rerouted before they can be viewed, and home page still changing.

Can you do the following please

Download and save WinPFind.zip
UNZIP the contents to your desktop
Don't run it yet

RESTART your Computer into SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu and hit Enter

In safe mode
Open the WinPFind folder you extracted to desktop
Double click on WinPFind.exe

Click START SCAN
Let this finish, a log will open so you will know it's done
Close out after

Reboot back to Normal mode

Back in Windows
Post the results of the WindPFind.txt located in the WinPFind folder

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Try the following

Save FixP.zip to your desktop
DO NOT choose Open when downloading, choose SAVE
Then extract the contents to your desktop

Double click on Fix_Protocol_zones_ranges.reg
Allow to merge to the registry

Reboot the computer

Use Internet Explorer and Run the online Panda ActiveScan

    * Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
    * A new window will open...click the big Check Now button.
    * Enter your Country.
    * Enter your State/Province.
    * Enter your e-mail address.
    * Select either "Home User or Company."
    * Click the big Scan Now button.
    * Allow the ActiveX component to install and download the files required for the scan. This may take a couple of minutes.
    * Click on MyComputer to start the scan.

When the scan is complete
 click See Report, then click Save Report and save it to your Desktop.
Reboot your computer again

Back in Windows, please post back all the following
1. Post a fresh hijackthis log
2. Post the whole report from Panda's

the laptop came with xp on it, no disc.  i can get another xp disc, but it may take a while.  i'm not sure if you can use any xp disk, or you need the specific one that was originally loaded on the computer.

once again, i was assured that xp is legit.
