Desktop Hijacked

I searched through the forums a bit to see if I could find a solution to my problem but I haven't been able to find one just yet. My desktop has seemed to take on a white background that sometimes turns gray when moving the cursor and my icons have also been changed. It's driving me bonkers. I would really appreciate any help.

Can you do the following please

Download and save to your desktop
[color=\"red\"]SmitfraudFix[/color][/url] (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
We'll need this later

Print these set of instructions, or save them to a text file on desktop for reference

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - (no file)


After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis


Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
In safe mode


Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't
Reboot back to Normal Windows
I'll need to see the log it generates later, by default it is located at
C:\rapport.txt

Back in Normal Windows
download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Save the installer to desktop

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
       
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
       
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
       
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

Post back the following:
Along with the log from MBAM
. Post the report from Smitfraudfix>>C:\Rapport.txt
 Run a fresh Scan and save logfile with Hijackthis and post it too

It was running pretty good but when I got home from work today something went wrong. I got on it for just a few seconds and then it restarted and couldn't boot. I ended up getting this message.

Try this first, if no go, I have a link with other suggestions,

# Restart your computer
# After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
# Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
# Select the  option, "Last know good configuration"

Where exactly is Automatic restart once I do hit F8? And I tried really hard to read the error message to narrow down the problem but it goes so fast I can't see a thing.

When starting, you tap F8
You come to the Advanced Startup windows

Choose "Disable Automatic Restart on system failure" if you see it

Do you have the full XP install CD, or a recovery disk?

I believe it's the full XP Install CD.

The  disabling of Autorestart worked and it's a stop error. Here it is.

A Repair, you won't lose your data
But there is never a guarantee, I'ver personally never had a problem with a Repair
You can always boot with a Knoppix CD or similiar and backup important files,etc...
Or slave the harddrive to another computer
That is your option

Turns out I only have XP installed with the Sytem disk that came with my computer but I did a System Restore and things were going fine but then got stuck at the Welcome Screen. Should I just restart or will that cause more problems?
