Can you try the following, just to ensure it's not a recording software problem

Since you have the correct version of Media Player and .Net Framework
Try downloading and installing

After installation, you won't be prompted to reboot, but reboot anyways
Then try erasing a disk and see what happens
Or try recording with it

my computer now is not even recognizing my CD drive.  when I go to uninstall it and reinstall it, it gives me the following error after ebooting my computer.

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

this is becoming increasingly frustrating

Did you install CDBurnerXP?

That error resembles a bad registry key

yes i installed it but since it is giving me that error now, it obviously wont recognize the drive to drive erasing or burning.

Ok, try the following
I think we may be onto something
Can you redownload a fresh copy of CDBurnerXP
Save it to your desktop, but DO NOT install it yet

Ensure you still have fix.reg saved to desktop
If you don't, here are the instructios again
=Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg

Save this file on the desktop
Ensure to copy from REGEDIT4 and down in the code box

Access your Add and Remove Programs and remove your version of CDBurnerXP

Don't  reboot yet
Instead
Open Device Manager and uninstall your CD burner
DON'T reboot yet

Double click on fix.reg and allow to add/merge to registry at the prompt

When that's done, finally reboot your computer

Back in Windows

Reinstall the fresh version of CDBurnerXP

After installation reboot one more time
then try it and see if it works

after all that my drives were once again recognized. I then was able to erase the entire disk using CDBurnerXP.  When i tried to burn it however i got the same type of error.  That the disk was unusable and could not be burned.

Since you have RecordNow installed
Take a look at the following link

Update PXEngine and reboot, see if it helps with either recording software
