when I first brought the laptop home I was able to connect to open networks from other people in my apartment with auto ip. sorry i just remembered about this, it doesnt work now though, i need to have a static ip. and i am using windows to configure my networks

So this is only happening on this router?
I would start fresh with it, there should be a reset button

Here's the instructions from the manual

To reset the router, locate the reset button (hole) on the rear panel of the unit. With the router powered on, use a
paperclip to hold the button down for 10 seconds. Release the button and the router will go through its reboot process.
Wait about 30 seconds to access the router. The default IP address is 192.168.0.1. When logging in, the username is
admin and leave the password box empty.

Then run the wizard, or set up manually
I suggest that you run the wizard, with a wired connection
Note the procedure in the manual for first time setup

Sorry I havn't been on lately i've just been busy. You suggested resetting the router but I dont like the idea of doing that because I don't know what the old password for the router was or if it even had one, if theres nothing else we can try then i'm just going to give up on it. Thanks for all the help so far.

I suggest that you thoroughly read the manual for your Router, I gave you instructions how to reset
Running the Wizard instructions are in the manual

I'm not sure what you mean that you don't know what the old password is?
I thought you already accessed the configuration thru your browser
The default is admin for user and leave blank for password

all I meant was i didnt know what the defaults were for the router. I was worried about resetting it and not being able to acess it again afterwards. Anyway in a few days when no one is home and i can get access to the router i will do this

I had he oppertunity the other day to reset the router to factory settings. This created a series of problems with the router, we couldnt connect any computer to the internet, and yes we re-did all the settings. Anyway we got them up and running again and to fix the problem with the laptop we changed the security type to a different type. We switched it from wpa2 to wep

Hmmm, I mentioned trying WEP earlier, it seemed liked security encryption might be a problem
