Windows Update Problems
« on: December 28, 2009, 05:17:34 PM »
My windows update isn't working correctly, when I go to check for updates it gives me an error.

It says windows cannot search for new updates, and gives me the error code 80070490 and states that windows has encountered and unknown error.
My most recent check for updates was back on 10/21/09, but it says that I've installed new updates as recent as 11/27/09.

I've looked all through windows help and researched a bit on the internet, some sites suggest that it could be some sort of malware but I haven't been able to find anything of concern.

I need some help/advice, thanks.

Let's take a closer look
Download OTL.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.
 • Close all windows and double click on OTL.exe to run it
 • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
 • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
 • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

NOTE: If you have trouble, or an error message trying to post the logs
Can you upload it to a reply box
In a Reply, select "Browse..." on the bottom right and then navigate to the file and select it
Then click "Upload"

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Can you try running this Fixit tool from Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Save it to desktop and right click on it and "Run as Administrator"
Follow any prompts, when it's done, reboot the computer

See if it's any help
Take note:

Note this Fix it Solution has two modes Default and Aggressive. You should run the Fix it solution in Default mode and determine if it resolves your problem with Windows Update before running it in Aggressive mode.

Do you have a System Restore point you can try before this started happening?

See if you have a restore point before this started to happen by choosing a different restore point as
described in this link

Microsoft is recommend a repair (Upgrade) installation from that error message
But can you try the following

Download and save to desktop the System Update Readiness Tool

After you have saved to desktop, temporarily disable your AntiVirus
Afterwards:
right click on it and "Run as Administrator"

When it's done, reboot the computer

Note: from Microsoft
Quote
After you download the System Update Readiness Tool, it runs a onetime scan for inconsistencies that might prevent future servicing operations. This scan typically takes less than 15 minutes to run. However, the tool might take significantly longer on some computers. The Windows Update progress bar is not updated during the scan, and progress seems to stop at 60% complete for some time. This behavior is expected. The scan is still running and you should not cancel the update.

Do you have the Vista DVD?

You can try a repair(Upgrade) as suggested here

I just noticed your running both Microsoft Security Essentials and McAfee AntiVirus

Is McAfee outdated? Did you just recently install Microsoft Security Essentials?
I suggest that you hold onto only ONE AntiVirus software and completely uninstall the other
Having more than one can cause conflicts with each other and system instabilities

I dont have the full mcafee antivirus, i have some virusscan thing that i had to download to get on my network at school. The microsoft security essentials was installed when I reinstalled vista, and the mcafee like a month later. Is using just the mcafee one going to suffice?

If you have an AntiVirus software that is capable of updating and keeps up to date
You don't need another
Not sure what you mean by the school recommended one that what a partial AV, but I doubt it, by the looks at your log, you have McAfee full version installed
So as I suggested earlier, remove one or the other, your choice

See how things are afterwards

Have you tried the repair with the Install disk?

Note: If you have a Dell, it may be possible, however, I see you have Service pack 2 installed
Is this what came preinstalled on your system?
If not, you may have to clean install again, but I gave the link to Repair (Upgrade) earlier, take a look

I left my vista disk at school so I won't be able to get to it for another week or so. But, I do have a dell, and when I installed everything I'm not 100% positive but I think that Service Pack 2 did not come preinstalled. I have the link to my last topic, there are some hijack logs and whatnot in there from when I first clean installed, "Windows Failed to Start" .
